A HORRIBLE DEATH The Charred Remains of William Armitage Found in the Fire He Had Been Fighting.
Oregonia the Scene of a Terrible Accident on Last Monday Afternoon
On Monday afternoon William Armitage, a well known farmer, who lived on a farm about a mile south of Oregonia, was burned to death in a fire he himself had kindled. He had been clearing some land and started the fire two weeks ago. It had been burning ever since and had spread from his farm to the land of John Van Horn and Rose Murray. Monday, Mr. Armitage went blackberrying in the morning but returned home about ten o'clock and started at once to fight the fire. He was never seen alive again. In the meantime William Elbon had noticed the fire, and, hastily eating his dinner, hurried to the woods, he found it entirely beyond his control and went for help, first to Mr. Armitage's who he was told, was not at home. Finally John Van Horn and his son came and the three men fought the fire for two hours. While so engaged, they repeatedly passed what they supposed was a log. At length, their attention was attracted and they were horrified to see that it was the terribly burned body of Mr. Armitage. From its position the general belief is that he was overcome by the heat while fighting the fire and had fallen, either unconscious or dead, in the flames. There evidently had been no struggle and the merciful supposition is that he suffered no pain.
Mr. Armitage was sixty-one years of age and a member of the Friends church. His wife and two children
survive him. The funeral services were held at Turtlecreek Friends C hurch on Tuesday afternoon.

Jabez Hunt Hadley: was born, in 1817, in Adams, Clinton, Ohio.2 Taken from the History of Clinton Co., Ohio, "In Adams township in 1834, there was a frame schoolhouse built on what was then the Holaday farm, afterward and since known as the Quinby farm. It was weather-boarded on the outside and ceiled overhead with oil on the inside. Between the studding's in the sides and ends, mortar made of clay had been filled in to make it warm instead of plastering. These wall were whitewashed from time to time with blue clay. Around the room next to the wall were placed rudely constructed benches made from slabs obtained at the saw-mill. Built out from the wall all around and supported by brackets underneath, were wide boards that answered the purpose of desks. The scholars sat facing the wall, except the smaller children, who were seated around the stove that occupied the center of the room."
Jabez Hadley taught at this school sometime during the years of 1835-1860. He recieved an invitation to return to the first annual reunion of the Teachers and Pupils who attended school at the Quinby Schoolhouse, dated August 11, 1888. I don't know if he attended this reunion or not since Jabez was about 71 years old by this time.
Hadley was elected the Justice of the Peace in Adams Township on April 7, 1856 and with the exception of the Harvey family, the Hadley family was by far the most numerous of any one family among the earlier settlers of the western part of Clinton County, Ohio.
Jabez and his family: left Ohio, 6 Apr 1885, for Missouri.3 They arrived in Sedalia, Mo. on April 7, 1885 and rented a farm 8 miles North of Green Ridge from a man by the name of Cornealis Rains. The farm was 140 acres, 70 acres in cultivation, and paid $25.00 cash rent.
Taken from the ledger book and written by Jabez's son, Alva W. Hadley, "The next year we bought a 215 acre farm in St. Clair Co., MO. near Taborville, 9 miles from Rockville, Mo, a R.R. town. We paid $25.00 an acre and we sure got bit at that. The farm was really worn out and the building old and poor, but twas the Spring Branch of running water for stock water that looked so good to us. Sure good water. We sure could have done much better if we had looked around before we bought that old farm."
He died on 12 Oct 1889 in Taborville, St. Clair, Missouri.4 His death certificate from St. Clair Co., Roll C 9978 page 24 number 43 has his name as John ? Hadley, 72 yrs. 13 days and had been a farmer. The cause of death is listed as pneumonia with complications of congestion of the brain. He was sick for 4 days before he died. The doctor was R.E. Compton, M.D., Taborville, MO., and Undertaker L.L. Steriff of Appleton City, Mo. Jabez is buried in Rockville Cemetery, Rockville, Mo. Rockville, Mo. was known as Sorgum Hill in
1868.

Alva Hadley wrote about John Watson Armitage's children and grandchildren. John had a daughter by his 1st wife, Sally, but no record of her name. He had 2 sons by his 2nd wife, Lucretia, Ira and Neosho. He also had 2 grand children, Ella J. and Zackey Stephens and great grand children, Darlene Egginsan born April 7, 1931 and Ronald Egginsan born September 7, 1933 in Tacoma, Washington.
Alva also wrote in his Journal,
"Uncle John W. Armitage and family came to Missouri October 31st 1893 on Tuesday. Uncle J. W. Armitage left our neighborhood on October 10th Wednesday morning 4:30 o'clock 1894."

I have been trying to find something on the Emma Mercer problem. I found her in the 1850 and 1860 federal census. In the 1850 census she is listed as Emezeta Mercer age 4 born abt 1846, her parents are David Mercer b. abt 1815 amd Kizeah b. abt 1822. They are living in Licking, Blackford, Indiana. In the 1860 census, same place as 1850, she is listed as Emma, age 14 same birth date and parents, David M. and Keziah Mercer. Then we know she married Liberty Thayer Armitage in 1865 in Blacvkford Co., Indiana. Then in the 1870 census in Hartford, Blackford, Indiana I found Liberty Armitage living with David and Keziah and two of their children. There is no Emma listed so I am going to assume she was born abt 1846 and died before 1870. Liberty must have continued to live with her family after her death until he remarried to Emma Celia Stevens in 1871.

In the 1900 Federal Census Seba S., age 42, is living in Madison, Lee Co., Iowa with his wife Frankie, age 40 and their son John S., age 5. The census states that Seba and Frankie have been married for 15 years and she has had one child and one still living. Seba is working as a machinist.

I did find a birth certificate for an unnamed Armitage born and died in 1893 in Fort Madison, Lee Co., Iowa. The parents were listed as Seba S. Armitage and Frankie Stodend.

In the 1910 Federal Census Seba S., age 52 is living in Davenport Ward 5, Scott Co., Iowa with his wife Frankie, age 49 and their son John, age 15. Also living with them is Frankie's mother, Nancy Stoderd, age 75. The census states they have been married for 25 years and have had one child and one living.
I guess they did not want to remember the child they lost in 1893. Seba is working as a tool maker.

In the 1915 Iowa State Census Seba S., age 57 is living in Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa. The record states Seba is a tool maker and can read and write. The value of his home is $2,500.00 He has no church affiliation.

Obituary: OBITUARY
THE LATE MRS. GEORGE OWENS
After several weeks illness, Sarah Armitage, wife of George Smith Owens, died at Cambray Ont., on Monday March 23rd at the age of 72 years. She was a descendant of a Yorkshire family who were among the earliest settlers in Mariposa Township, Victoria County. Her funeral took place on Wednesday the 25th from the United Church of which she had been president of the W.M.S. for 14 years. The large cortege proceeded to Eden Cemetery where burial took place. Besides her husband, four sons, John of Woodville, Charles of Ottawa, Herman and Jesse of Cambray, four daughters, Mrs W. Wells Cambray, Mrs. W. Moynes, Lindsay, Mrs. A Tamblin, Oshawa and Miss Zella at home. Two brothers John and Amos Armitage and a sister Mrs S. Walters in Mariposa and two other sisters and a brother in California survive.
Many beautiful floral tributes were received from Toronto, Ottawa, Lindsay and Oshawa.

From the census records below, I can piece together a little bit of information about Daniel and Susan. Daniel was born in Canada and came to the United States in 1870, or when he was about 21-22 years old. I have no idea if he came with his parents, and/ or if he came directly to this area. He must have married Susan Armitage in Michigan. I previously had that they married in 1871, although the 1900 census record seems to indicate it was a little later. They are listed in 1880 in Au Gres in Bay County, Michigan and 1900 in Arenac County, Michigan, apparently near Au Gres. Arenac County was formed out of Bay County in the early 1880's, and Au Gres was in Whitney Township in Arenac Township, meaning that they were probably on the same farm in 1880 and 1900. They are listed in Turner Township, Turner Village, in 1910 and 1920. This is very close to Au Gres, but seems to show that they must have moved, and that Daniel was no longer farming. In the 1920 census, Daniel is listed as a blacksmith. Presumably they remained in Truner Village until Daniel died in in 1925. Susan lived another 16 years.

General Notes: Emigrated with parents from England to Canada about 1837-1840. On 1861 census for St.Marys, Perth Co., Ontario as Wesleyan Methodist farmer of two acres, living in a one family frame house. Between July 25, 1864 and July 25, 1865, Henry and first wife Margaret moved to Forester, MI. The 1870 census shows him to be a carpenter, while the marriage certificate of 1874 shows him to be a mechanic. Cousin Phebe (Armitage) Laughran witnessed the marriage of Emma Delia to Henry. In 1880, he is listed as a carpenter at Forester with Emma and two children by Margaret (Charles and Franklin) and children Edith and Ida May. Wife Emma Delia died of blood poisoning on August 5, 1884 and is buried in the Forester cemetery. Henry married a third time, to Elizabeth, likely a widow of Scottish immigrant Alexander Patullo who d.1880. Grandson Ralph C. Berry has recalled the Patullo children as Uncle Ad (Adam) and Uncle Tom (Thos. R.) who were farmers at Deckerville, MI.
