MARINE PAINTER
Mr Cecil King, T.D., R.I., R.O.I,, R.B.A., the marine and, landscape painter and author, died in hospital yesterday morning at the age of 61. Cecil King, the son of G. Frederic King and Alice Elizabeth Bowker, was born on August 6, 1881, and educated at Haileybury. After abandoning the idea of adopting engi-neering as a profession, he studied at the Westminster School of Art and in Paris. A visit to Holland in 1904 revived in him an ambition to become a painter of the sea.
Drawings of his were accepted by the Sphere and the Illustrated London News (to which he became a regular contributor), and in early days he did a good deal of poster work. A keen traveller, he painted many water-colours, full of life and colour, of foreign towns. His sea paintings are represented in the Imperial War Museum and in the Paris Musee de Marine. He was vice-president of the Society of Marine Artists and marine painter to the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Besides devoting himself mainly to marine painting, King was an enthusiastic amateur of all things naval, and had an extensive know-ledge of naval lore. He was the author of a history of British flags (1914) and of a short history of the Navy called "His Majesty's Ships and their Forbears" (1940). Last year , he published "Rule, Britannia," a record of some of the Navy's outstanding engagements in this war, with decorative marginal sketches by himself. King was the designer of the Zeebrugge, Armada, and other historical ship models used at Wembley in 1924. He served, in the last war and was a retired captain, T .F.
