Duke of Roxburgh, Ship: 417 tons, Captain: James Thomson, Surgeon Superintendent: Francis Healy, Sailed Plymouth 5th October 1839 - arrived Port Nicholson 8th February 1840 "The 'Duke' made the third vessel of the fleet to reach Port Nicholson, and by that time the foreshore at Petone had become a busy locality. Tents were supplemented by shanties of various descriptions, but some of the whares put up with the help of the Maoris were of a more ambitious character, and so well built that they lasted several years. Round about this somewhat incongruous camp-settlement the belongings of the settlers were scattered, and as there were by this time about 500 white people ashore the scene was decidedly animated.

General Notes: Our Pioneer Heritage Volume 16 Isles of Man-Wight-Jersey The James Cowley Familyâ€"1852 Weber County
Faced with the necessity of leaving Nauvoo, Illinois, the Cowley family sold what articles of food, furniture and clothing they possessed to get boat fare down the river to St. Louis. James found work in a mill and Matthias in a bookbindery. They worked at these jobs for a year until they had enough for the boat trip to Council Bluffs. On this trip the daughter, Isabelle Ann, met James Udy, a young widower with two small sons, one of whom died soon after. Isabelle and James Udy became very good friends and she took the little boy, William, to her heart and gave him the love that he had missed from his own mother. The journey to Council Bluffs was not too pleasant as their food was scarce and many were ill, but the will of the saints to reach the Great Salt Lake Valley kept them going. Isabelle Ann and James Udy were married July 16, 1850, at Council Bluffs. They went on to Winter Quarters where they found a place to build a small cabin and begin farming.

Threshing machines were purchased from John Blood of Kaysville and boated to the island. W. W. Steed supplied lumber to the operation, and Farmington Commercial and Mercantile Company supplied many items of hardware. Other companies mentioned were George M.
