"Isabel was my favourite Auntie Belle because she always gave me a birthday present and a Christmas present (my birthday is on 24 December and so many people gave me one combined present.) I can remember on the walls of my grandparent's home in Eltham many excellent oil paintings by her, some quite large. I often wonder what happened to them - I would have loved to have one to keep. I remember that William McAlpine used to speak familiarly of prominent Auckland business people and their wives such as members of the families of John Court and Milne of Milne & Choyce- I suppose in a rather snobbish way. In my earliest memories of them they lived in the posh suburb of Remuera and then they built one of the first houses in Paratai Drive, Orakei witha magnificent harbour view, also one of the more snobbish areas.However, both of them were very good to our family, staying with us and we with them.

William McAlpine owned the McAlpine Hat business, and went around the country selling hats. Sometimes he took his daughter, Joan, with him, and always stayed at our home when he did business nearby, and always gave my mother a new hat."

"A woman thought to be Hawke’s Bay’s eldest resident died last night aged 106. Hetty Lean, born Harriet Jane Parker in Napier on July 3 1894……taken home to Wanstead (southeast of Waipukurau) on horeseback, three weeks after she was born, Mrs Lean was raised in Central Hawkes Bay."

Hetty Lean, my grandmother, had connections with Durham.Her Grandfather, Robert Parker of Cookson’s Green, Ferryhill lived 1795-1882 (age 87yrs) and her Grandmother Mary Parker 1795-1885 (100 yrs).

Her father William Charles Parker was born at Ferryhill, south of Durham, in 1868, the youngest of seven children and had trained as a teacher. The idea of teaching did not appeal however, so when his brother Robert started planning to emigrate to new Zealand, he decided to accompany him.

In 1891, the brothers arrived in New Zealand and took up employment as ploughmen in the Waikato.

They are also known to have ridden horses from the Waikato to Hawkes Bay in three days, sometimes riding at night.

William Charles met Clara Alice Johnston who was working as cook on a station near Wanstead and they were married at St Matthew’s Church, Hastings 20 July 1892.

William Charles and Robert Parker were in partnership calling themselves Parker Bros and did farming and contracting. Many roads around the Wanstead and Wallingford areas were built by them.

They then decided to go farming themselves and purchased part of the Argyle Station Central Hawkes Bay) and called the property "Ferrydale".

Hetty was the oldest of six children and was considered to be delicate as a child. She still has one sister alive-Mabel Smith aged 93, who lives in Taupo. Two of her siblings lived to be 89 and 80.

William Charles and Clara Alice Parker are buried at Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Palmerston North.

Robert Parker did not marry and returned to the family farm at Ferryhill in 1912.

Hetty has been buried at Hastings with her late husband Alexander Annan McIntyre Lean.
