Mr Charles COWPER - (1834 - 1911)
Personal Born on 29 September 1834, Sydney, New South Wales. He was the son of Charles and Eliza, nee Sutton. His father became Sir Charles Cowper, Premier and Colonial Secretary. Charles Jr was educated at the school of his uncle, W M Cowper, and the King's School, Parramatta. He had two marriages: to Mary, daughter of Robert Copeland Lethbridge, on 11 October 1855 with whom he had four sons and one daughter; and to Amy Rose Clarissa Bramley in 1898 in Sydney. He died on 16 November 1911 at Bowral, New South Wales. He was Church of England.
Community Activity
First Honorary Secretary, Goulburn Horticultural and Agricultural Society, 1857; He was on the Board of the Benevolent Asylums Board in 1862.
Parliamentary Service & Political History
A member of the Government without a seat in Cabinet. The office of Clerk of the Executive Council was made a political appointment for him in September 1861; this was rescinded by proclamation on his retirement in October 1863.
Qualifications, occupations and interests
He was a storekeeper and gold buyer when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly. At 17 he managed Burrabogie Station, near Hay, for his father. In the mid 1850's it is likely that he worked on his father's properties in County Argyle. In the late 1850's, he became a storekeeper and gold buyer at Kiandra. In 1856, he managed the election campaign for J W Chisholm in Argyle. In the later 1860's, he worked on stations in Queensland. In 1869-70 he was the police magistrate at Bourke. In 1870-74, he was the water police magistrate in Sydney, and Sheriff of New South Wales, in 1874-96.
