Thomas was a Major General of the 25th N.I. [Native Infantry?]. He became a Caded in 1818, was admitted Sept. 4 1819, an Ensign Sept. 3 1819, Lieutenant Dec. 02, 1820, Captain Dec. 7 1827, Major Nov. 20 1845, Lt.Col. oct. 16, 1851, Bt.Col. Nov. 28 1854. He retired and became an Honorary Major General December 31, 1861.
Services:
Thomas was already in India when he was appointed Cadet. He was posted as Lieut. to 1/5 N.I. Jan. 8 1821, transferred to 20th N.I. May 1824, exchanged to 11th N.I. August 1824 until August 1828. He was at the seige and capture of Bhurtpore, Lieut. 11th N.I. [India Medal]. Posted Lt.Col. 21st N.I. January 1852 to January 1854; and was commanding this Regiment at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny. Although disaffected and consequently disbanded in 1859, the 21st N.I. did not break into open revolt.

General Notes: In 1719, Thomas Chaplin bought Blankney Hall from the Commissioners of Confiscated Property. The estate passed to his son, John and remained in the family until 1897 when mounting debts forced Henry Chaplin to sell it to Lord Londesborough.

The Blankney estates had been the property of the Deincourts since the Norman Conquest. In the fifteenth century, it passed through the marriage of an heiress to the Lovels of Titchmarsh. All the estates of the Lovels were confiscated for the crown by Henry VII after the battle of Stoke-on-Trent. Blankney was bought by the Thorolds, who did much to embellish the house with the fine carved panelling of the period.

But in the reign of Charles I, through a marriage with the Thorold heiress, it passed into the hands of Sir William Widdrington who was created Baron Widdrington of Blankney in 1643. Lord Widdrington's great grandson had the indiscretion to take part in the rebellion of 1715. He was captured at Preston, convicted of high treason and his lands were confiscated in the following year.
