General Notes: In an e-Mail, dated January 19, 2013, Patrick Grigsby included the following:
Earlier in his army life, Henry Selby Rickards had come to Egypt where he settled in early 1840's, converting to Islam, he went on the Hajj so that he could marry "Hanim" Fatoom. On his conversion, he changed his name to Abdallah (servant of Allah) and was later elevated by the then khedive, Abbas Pasha, and came to be known as Abdallah Pasha il Ingilizi. His Egyptian wife was the daughter of a [religious] Sheik, possibly attached to Cairo's famous Al-Azhar mosque/university. The Family were believed to be direct descendants of the prophet Mohammad; but this is in some doubt. They had seven children, the eldest Amin was known to my mother as 'uncle Amin'. I have the Works of William Shakespear, a tome that is insribed, "To dear Doshia from her uncle - Amin Abdallah - 17/9/18". During the first World War, my grand mother Mariam with my mother and her two sisters were evacuated from Turkey to Egypt whilst my grandfather was with the British/Anzac forces at Gallipoli my Uncle William on the Somme in France. In spite of Turkey being on the German side, when the Rickards family returned to Mersin the Turkish authorities handed back, intact with contents, the many properties that my grand father owned in Mersin.
AND, in an e-Mail from Noha Sadek, received on February the 12th, 2013, she substantiated much of what Patrick has said; but added:
Henry Rickards held several positions in the Egyptian administration, including that of the first director of the Egyptian railways in 1853, but he was dismissed the following year when Khedive Said came to power. HSR left Egypt in 1869 for England until a final move to Lebanon in 1876.
In an e-Mail from James Wilkinson in May 2013, he included the following Quote from Nick Rickards:
As a teenager, Henry went to Portugal to join a "private army" of the Queen of Portugal \endash probably all mercenaries - and he stayed there until he was in his early 20's At some point, he arrived in Egypt as a translator for the British Colonial service and made a career in Cairo and Alexandria. For a year, he was the Director General of the Egyptian state railways, working with George Stephenson to build the Cairo to Alexandria railroad. His portrait is hung in the municipal museum in Cairo. After that year, he was replaced by an Egyptian but became a "General in the Egyptian Service" and was called Abdallah Pasha El Ingles.
