General Notes: The Dixson Collection
In the late 19th century a valuable collection of minerals from the Barrier Mining Field at Broken Hill was gathered by Edward Aldridge. In 1909 Hugh Dixson gave the University ?7,050 to purchase the collection. For some years these were displayed in this building (see the photograph on the stairs) but the collection is now mostly held in storage. Many of the minerals could no longer be collected in the field at Broken Hill when they were purchased by the University.

AND COMPANY LIMITED

There had been considerable delay because Lewy Pattinson was meticulous as to whom should be made directors and felt strongly it was important to get well known directors on the board. Lewy Pattinson was hard to please. Hugh Dixson, a prominent businessman, agreed to become a director and took 10,000 shares. His father was the founder of the successful Dixson & Sons Tobacco Co. He later became Sir Hugh Dixson and was the grandfather of Hugh Dixson.

Sir Hugh Dixson Collection of Minerals from Broken Hill
In 1909 the sum of £7,050 was given by Sir Hugh Dixson, of Abergeldie, Summer Hill, to enable the University to purchase a collection of minerals obtained from the Barrier District of New South Wales made by Mr Edward Aldridge.
Sir Hugh Dixson Gift of Radium
In 1918 30 milligrams of radium, valued at £1,000 together with certain valuable apparatus, were given to the University by Sir Hugh Dixson, of Abergeldie, Summer Hill. Sir Hugh stated that during the war the radium was to be in the possession of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for the purposes of medical research, but within twelve months of the conclusion of the war an agreement was to be made between the University and the hospital as to whether it would be of greater benefit to society generally if used by the hospital, for medical science or for scientific purposes at the University.

DIXSON, SIR HUGH (1841-1926), business man and philanthropist,
son of Hugh Dixson, was born in George-street, Sydney, on 29 January 1841. He was educated at the school kept by W. T. Cape (q.v.) at Paddington, and at the age of 14 went to work at a timber yard. About a year later he joined the tobacco business founded by his father, and by the time he was 24 years old had an important share in the conduct of it. The business grew steadily, and after the father's death in 1880 expanded rapidly under the management of Dixson and his brother Robert. It was subsequently merged in the British-Australian Tobacco Company Proprietary Limited, probably the largest business of its kind in Australia. Dixson then retired, but with his wife continued his interest in the Baptist Church and in various philanthropic institutions. An early substantial gift was £5000 as the beginning of a fund to present a battleship to England. This fund was not successful and his gift was devoted to educating English boys at Australian agricultural colleges. A gift of £10,000 helped the establishment of an aged and infirm ministers' fund in the Baptist Church, and much assistance was given to the building of churches in various parts of the state. A sum of £20,000 was used to build a cancer wing at the Ryde home for incurables. But the gifts of Dixson and his wife were both many and widespread. Both worked on committees, and Dixson at various times was president of the Baptist Union, of the Baptist Home Mission Society, and of the Young Men's Christian Association. He died at Colombo on 11 May 1926. He was knighted in 1921. He married in 1866 Emma Elizabeth, daughter of W. E. Shaw, who died in 1922, and was survived by two sons and four daughters.
Dixson's elder son, Sir William Dixson, born in 1870, made a remarkable collection of pictures, books, manuscripts, prints, maps and charts, relating to Australia, all destined to become the property of the state of New South Wales. A large collection of pictures was presented in 1929 and housed in the William Dixson gallery at the Mitchell library, Sydney. He was knighted in 1939.

Hugh married Emma Elizabeth SHAW [18216] [MRIN: 7324], daughter of William Edward SHAW [18248] and Emma L COOMBE [18249], in 1866 in Raymond Terrace Colony of New South Wales. Emma was born in 1844 and died in 1922 in Petersham Sydney NSW Australia at age 78.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 18 M    i. Hugh DIXSON [18250] was born in 1868 in Sydney Colony of New South Wales and died in 1904 in Sydney NSW Australia at age 36.

19 M    ii. Sir William DIXSON, Kbe [18251] was born in 1870 in Sydney Colony of New South Wales and died in 1952 in Chatswood Sydney NSW Australia at age 82.

'It will be a satisfaction to me to know that in making this collection, and adding to it, I shall have performed a service to the people of this State and of the Commonwealth'

Sir William Dixson
Opening of the Dixson Gallery in 1929.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sir William Dixson, generous benefactor and wealthy discerning collector, was born in 1870, and educated at All Saints' College, Bathurst, New South Wales.

He was the grandson of Hugh Dixson, a Scottish tobacco manufacturer who emigrated to New South Wales in 1839 and established Dixson & Sons, the source of the family's fortune.

Dixson travelled extensively; on a world tour with his family in 1907 and 1908 he demonstrates a keen eye and records events, places, buildings, and people in their surroundings.

Unlike David Scott Mitchell, Dixson experienced some formal employment; as an engineer, including a period with Norman Selfe, expert in dock engineering and refrigeration. Before long he became involved in the family firm. He was a director of Dixson and Sons Limited between 1899 and 1903; and the British-Australasian Tobacco Company Limited from 1903 to 1908; and of the Dixson Trust Limited from 1909 until the final year of his life, 1952.

Dixson first offered his major pictures to the Library in 1919, and again in 1924, provided a suitable gallery was built to accommodate them. The Dixson Wing was opened in 1929, and following his death in 1952, his entire collection including books, coins, stamps, bookplates etc was transferred to form the Dixson Library. Unlike Mitchell's collection which can be added to, Dixson's was closed, reflecting the size, scope and nature of his collection at the end of his life. An ongoing monetary contribution in the form of the Sir William Dixson Foundation, with the express purpose of making rare materials in the Australian Pacific field available to students, funds the production of facsimiles through use of modern photographic and digital methods./

Dixson began collecting in the 1890s, and like David Scott Mitchell, he collected Australiana, with special emphasis on early navigation and geography, European exploration of the Pacific, and Australian artists before 1860. He especially valued works in pristine condition and would rebind volumes showing signs of wear. His collecting widened to include many formats - not only books and manuscripts but maps, coins, medals, curios, relics, postage stamps, bookplates, and above all, pictures.

His collection also contains some important European works, with fine examples of illuminated manuscripts, including a psalter, book of hours and missal. Among the early printed books is a first folio collected edition of Chaucer published in 1532; and a fine set of the 1837 first London edition of Charles Dicken's The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club in the original parts.

Pictures were a great love, and when the Dixson Galleries were opened in 1929, some three hundred pictures were available for display. Notable items include Thomas Phillips' portrait of Sir Joseph Banks, the portrait of Viscount Sydney by Gilbert Stuart, of Captain Cook by Joshua Reynolds, and a number of portraits of the early governors.

Landscape views include John Webber's Death of Captain Cook, Thomas Watling's Sydney Cove, 1794, and Francis Holman's Captain Cook's Ships H.M.S. Resolution and Adventure, 1772. There is also a wealth of art works by such notable artists as John Glover, Eugene von Guerard, S. T. Gill, Norman Lindsay, J. W. Lewin, Joseph Lycett, John Skinner Prout, Sydney Ure Smith, to name just a few.

Following the transfer of the remainder of his collection after his death in 1952, some 1500 mounted pictures, mostly watercolours, drawings and prints, 450 framed pictures (mostly oils), and 160+ sketch books and albums, comprise the bulk of his important pictures collection. The Library's magnificent Chaucer windows, bronze entrance doors and Shakespeare Library chandelier were also donated by Dixson.

Other gifts to the community include a bequest to the University of New England to establish the Library bearing his name, and the donation of some 1500 anthropological specimens to the Australian Museum in Sydney.

For his public benefactions he was knighted in 1939. Few today could match his purchasing power, dedication, and public generosity.
