H ugh Dixson was formerly deputy chairman of the listed investment company W. H. Soul Pattinson, but the Dixson family's long association with the company and its associate company Brickworks seems to be heading for change. Hugh and his son Jeremy - the third generation to serve the highly successful investment conglomerate - resigned last year from the Soul Pattinson board. The resignations led to speculation in the market about the future of their stake.
Soul Pattinson's share price has retreated from the heady levels of a year ago when enthusiasm was running high for the Adaro coal project on the Indonesian island of Kalimantan, a project in which Soul Pattinson is the controlling shareholder. It is an excellent mine, but lower coal prices and the Asian economic crisis have made the sharemarket cautious.
The Dixson family fortune goes back to the middle of the 19th Century, when Sir Hugh Dixson established a highly successful tobacco business. Hugh Dixson and his wife Patricia recently sold their $4 million Rose Bay home of 40 years.

Sydney. 70. Married twice, four children. Hugh Dixson has had a few changes in recent years. Last year, he and wife Patricia sold their home of 40 years in Sydney's harborside suburb of Rose Bay. The previous year, he and son Jeremy resigned from the board of Washington H. Soul Pattinson, a company with which the family has had a long association.
Jeremy was the third generation of the family to serve on the board. They may be free of public-company directorships, but not so public-company shares. Dixson Trust, the centrepiece of the family's fortune, has a substantial share portfolio. The fortune began with Sir Hugh Dixson, who prospered in a tobacco business in the mid-19th century.
