2. Rev. John DUFFUS, M.A. [10473] (Thomas1) was born 09 Jun 1804 in Kingston Jamaica, died 17 Oct 1870 in Mangonui Northland New Zealand at age 66, and was buried in Symonds Street Cemetery Auckland New Zealand.
General Notes:Born in Kingston, Jamaica at the home of an aunt. At an early age John was sent to England for his education. He went first to Eton, then to Queens College Oxford, where he was an Oxford Blue and took his MA degree.After leaving college, he entered the Anglican church and was ordained Deacon on 15 June 1828, and priest on 28 June 1829. He was appointed to the curacy of Tetbury where he met and married Maria Harriette PAUL in 1830 in Tetbury, Gloucester, England. She was the daughter of Robert Clark PAUL, member of an old established legal family. At an early age John's health broke down owing to the severe English climate (born Jamaica), and he was advised by his physician to leave England. He applied for and obtained an appointment in New South Wales, Australia, and on 20 May 1838 with his wife and 5 children (all under 7, and 2 "in arms") he sailed from Gravesend in the MV "Eden", and after a 5-month voyage, landed in Australia where he remained in a parish near Sydney. All his sisters and their husbands eventually followed him to Australia, as did his mother.
After 8 years in Australia he resigned from the ministry (salary could not support a large family ?) and sailed for Auckland, NZ , arriving in early 1848 where he took up farming at Te Hihi, Mangonui, Northland. He later moved to Auckland where he died.
Rev. John DUFFUS, M.A. Oxon. (Information on him on p.340 in "Young NZ -A history of early contact of Maori European".)
One daughter, Elizabeth Paul DUFFUS born 1832, married Robert Cecil TAYLOR. The DUFFUS family was living in Mangonui, NZ, at the time Cecil met Elizabeth.
Found the following DUFFUS family information:
Charlotte Plater DUFFUS (married 15 October 1862 at Mangonui, NZ, to William Thomas BALL);
Robert Drucki Lubecki DUFFUS (married on 2 February 1863 in Mangonui to Lucy Ann BALL).
Maria Frances DUFFUS, daughter of Anglican minister at Mangonui, Northland, married John HUNT in 1867 in NZ.
John was an Old Etonian who had succeeded Rev. Richard Taylor at the parish of Liverpool in N.S.W. in 1838. He had at first been extremely successful at Liverpool, but had suffered a breakdown. Later he formed a liaison with a parishioner, Miss Forbes. When she bore his child, he placed it in an orphanage and married her off to another parishioner, Mr Bull, but still continued the relationship. Bull complained and accused Duffus of adultery. A trial was held which Duffus boycotted, but Bishop Broughton withdrew his licence and closed the case to "spare Duffus and his wife embarrassment".
Duffus came to NZ in 1848 and lived on land he had bought years before near Mangonui, Northland.
He came to live in this remote area after his problems in N.S.W.
