64. Col. John FORSTER [48159] (Thomas (Capt.)⁵⁸, John (Capt.)³⁵, Thomas¹⁹, Thomas, Kt. (Sir)⁸, Thomas², Unknown¹) was born on 28 Jul 1681 in Elim St Elizabeth Parish Jamaica and died on 30 Aug 1731 in Jamaica at age 50.

John married Elizabeth SMITH [48160] [MRIN: 17263] in 1710. Elizabeth was born in Barbados West Indies and died in May 135 in Mesopotamia Moreland Jamaica.

HISTORY OF THE MORAVIAN MISSIONS IN JAMAICA

In the parish of St. Elizabeth are situated several sugar estates, Elim, Lancaster, Two-mile-wood, and the Bogue, the property of the Foster and Barham families, names well known in our church and mission. A hundred years ago, the proprietors of these plantations applied to the United Brethren for missionaries to preach the gospel to their slaves. The Brethren, ever ready to listen to such an application, complied with their request, and on the seventh of December, 1754, the Brethren Zecharias Caries, Thomas Shallcross, and Gotlieb Haberecht arrived in Jamaica. The Bogue Estate, on which the Brethren were located, and the other estates above named, are situated in a most unhealthy locality at the foot of the Manchester mountains, too far inland to admit the burning and intolerable heat to be mitigated by the sea-breeze. The land is very rich and productive, the sugar-cane thrives remarkably well, and the Black river, navigable for large boats, offers every accommodation for shipping. Altogether, this part of the country possesses so many advantages, that we need not be surprised to hear, that no fewer than nine hundred slaves belonged to these plantations; and that the produce of their labour was a rich mine of wealth.

The Fosters were presented with a plaque from the Moravian church in recognition of their bringing the mission to Jamaica. The family still had the plaque in their possession when they owned the Chatham Hotel, one of the first hotels in Montego Bay.

Thomas married Mary HELDEN [48175] [MRIN: 17266] in Jun 1741 in St George's Hanover Square London England. Mary was born in 1726 and died in 1776 in Egham Surrey England at age 50.

   72 M    iv. John FOSTER [48164] was born in 1723 in Elim St Elizabeth Parish Jamaica and died in 1744 at age 21.

+ 73 M    v. Samuel FOSTER [46707] was born in 1725 in Elim St Elizabeth Parish Jamaica.

   74 F    vi. Elizabeth FOSTER [48165] was born in 1726 in Elim St Elizabeth Parish Jamaica and died on 23 Dec 1729 in Elim St Elizabeth Parish Jamaica at age 3.

+ 76 F    viii. Margaret FOSTER [48167] was born in 1728 and died in 1789 at age 61.

+ 77 M    ix. Joseph FOSTER [48168] was born on 16 Dec 1729 in Jamaica and died on 21 Jul 1789 in Hardwicke Hall Shropshire England at age 59.
