Notes for JOSEPH WEIGHTMAN:
1844 - 1933
Farmer/Nurseryman
DOB 1844 - Pedigree Collection. He was the last of that line of WEIGHTMANS as his father's brother had no sons. The family had lived in Nottingham for hundreds of years, and there were many bequests in perpetuity left by them for the benefit of the poor of the parish. A great Aunt of Josephs, and her husband, Archdeacon COCHRANE, were among the first missionaries in the Red River settlement in Canada, and worked there for 40 years.
Left England 24-8-1864 with friend, George PIEREPOINT, and were away for four years visiting, among other places, NZ and Australia. On his return, he took up farming at Edwinstoew, Nottingham, and married his cousin. Married about 1869 in England to Emma Leonora GASCOIGNE. 11 children born 1869-1889.
He sailed again to NZ on the 'Merope' 4-5-1877, arriving 16-8-1877, settling at Awahuri, nr Mt Stewart, Feilding, Manawatu, NZ. Emma (+ children?) sailed on the 'Raikaia' with Emma's brother, William Edward GASCOIGNE in 1878.
Joseph built a 2-roomed whare of toi plastered with clay. There was no timber procurable at that time, and the nearest mill was Bartholomews of Feilding. It was 18 months before Joseph got the timber to build a 4-roomed cottage with a shingle roof.
Besides farming the section, mostly cropping, Joseph helped other neighbours with agricultural work. Wages were very low 6/- a day being the rate. Their land was a natural clearing covered with scrub and toil, and there was a good metalled road to the towns of Feilding & Palmerston North, then only bush settlements. There was a good general store and Post Office kept by Henry BENNETT half a mile away.
The children attended Awahuri School which was built shortly after their arrival. Awahuri was a large Maori settlement at that time. Church services were held in the schoolroom. There was a good hotel and a blacksmith shop. A doctor and nurse were available from Feilding.
When the lease expired, Joseph bought 40 acres joining from Peter STEWART, and built on it, naming it "Sherwood". There 3 more children were born. Joseph started as a nurseryman and florist on his 40 acres. This business grew and prospered with the help of his son, William, and Joseph retired in 1900.
He was a noted grower of roses and chrysanthemums, and won many medals and trophies.
Joseph then went to live at 'Birkland' on the Feilding Road, and William took over the nursery business but, after some years, gave up and with other land joining, went in for farming.
In his retirement, Joseph's hobby was growing narcissi, and his collection was known all over NZ. He was of good education, a staunch churchman, and took a keen interest in educational and political matters.
In an eMail, dated March 21, 2005, Martin Gascoigne provides an Obituary for Joseph from the Manawatu Evening Standard:
FRIDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 1933At the ripe age of 90 years , the death ocurred this morning of Mr Joseph Weightman, a pioneer settler of Awahuri.Born in Nottinghanshire, England, in 1844, the late Mr Weightman came to New Zealand in 1877 and seetled in Awahuri when it was afr removed from the appearance it presents today.Taking up farming pursuits, the deceased gentleman shortly afterwards followed his naturel inclination and devoted himself to nursey work and fruit-growing.The steady application of his undoubted ability in this direction was not long brining results, and long before he retired after a lifetime spent in the cultivation of things beautiful he hd the satisfaction of seeing the name of Weightman associated with flowers throughout the length and breadth of the country.Of a quiet, retiring disposition, the late Mr Weightman never took an active part in public affairs, devoting his activities to caring for his family and to his chosen profession. He made however, by his inherent courtesy and kindliness, a host of friends over a wide area, and these will deeply regret his passing. For some years he was chiarman of the Awahuri school committee, and in that capacity the school benefited by his work.About 11 years ago the deceased gentleman retired from active work to live in Feilding, but since an illness he suffered a few months ago he returned to the old home where he had lived and laboured so long to quietly pass away this morning. He was predeaced by his wife some 15 years ago and of a family of 6 sons and 5 daughters, one son and one daughter predeceased him also. To the surviving members of the family the sympathy of their many friends in their loss will readily be extended.
Additional Gascoigne Family History as told by Emmie Bathe of Putaruru:“Joseph and Emma Leonora Weightman (nee Gascoigne) left England by the sailing ship Merope on May 14th 1877 arriving in Lyttleton on August 9th, and at Napier August 16th 1877.Joseph was the only son of William and Mary-Ann (nee Gascoigne) Weightman, of Warsop, Nottinghamshire, and was born at Ollerton, Notts, on May 29th 1844. He was the last of that line of Weightmans as his father’s brothers had no sons.Records in the parish church show that the family had lived in Nottinghamshire for hundreds of years, and there were many bequests in perpetuity for the benefit of the poor in the parish left by them. Till he was twenty Joseph lived on the farm with his parents, but then decided to travel and see more of the world. He and a friend left England on August 4th 1864 and were away for four years, visiting, among other places, Australia and New Zealand. On his return he took up farming in Edwinstowe, in Notts, and married his cousin Emma Leonora Gascoigne. After eight years he again felt the urge to try new lands and decided on New Zealand. There was no emigration at that time (sponsored) as the scheme was in abeyance for several years so Joseph had to bear the expense of the journey with his wife and five children. Emma’s brother Edward Gascoigne (my grandfather) came with them, leaving his wife Emma and four children to follow later when he had made a home.On reaching Napier, Joseph and Edward went to the Manawatu and took a bush-felling contract at Kairanga. They each leased a section of land at Arahuri near Mt Stewart. Joseph built a two roomed whare of toi-toi and plastered clay and Emma and the children came from Napier. There was no timber procurable at that time and the nearest mill was in Feilding. All orders were filled in rotation and it was eight months before Joseph got the timber to build a four roomed cottage with a shingle roof. Wages were very low, six shillings a day being the rate. Emma Leonora died at “Birkland” on May 6th 1919. Emma Leonora was the daughter of John and Mary-Ann (nee Stevenson) Gascoigne of Kingston, Leister, and was born at Kegworth, Leicestershire on June 14th 1846. Her grandfather Stevenson fought at waterloo and won a medal “for valour”.The Gascoigne family were proud that they came from Gascony at the time of the Norman Conquest. A noted ancestor was Sir William Gascoigne, Lord Chief Justice of England, and an ancestress Ann Askew was burnt at the stake for her religious beliefs”
Joseph married Emma Leonora GASCOIN [12063] [MRIN: 5264], daughter of John GASCOIN [12062] and Ann STEVENSON [26637], on 18 Jan 1869 in St Winifred's Kingston-on-Soar Nottinghamshire England. General Notes: 'She took up life in a new country bravely and made a home of refinement and hospitality. She was greatly beloved, being of a most sympathetic and understanding nature. For years she did all the knitting and sewed by hand for her large family. However busy she was, there was always time for a good book for she was a great reader and looked on good literature as a necessity of life. She was a brilliant conversationalist and took great interest in all that helped the good of the district. (from Pamela Ferguson)'

Hugh is certainly a family name, as it is continued by his son and grandson, and it is interesting to note that he was familiarly called "Hudie", which, as Hugh is a common Norman name, probably has been passed down for many generations, from his Norman ancestor, who was Hugh de Gascony."Tantalizing final remark

For years she did all the knitting and sewed by hand for her large family. However busy she was, there was always time for a good book for she was a great reader and looked on good literature as a necessity of life. She was a brilliant conversationalist and took great interest in all that helped the good of the district. (from Pamela Ferguson)'
In 1893 she was married, living in Awahuri nr Feilding.

"In Loving Memory of Emma Leonara, beloved wife of Joseph WEIGHTMAN (Birkland, Awahuri), died 6 May 1919 aged 72 yrs; also of the above Joseph WEIGHTMAN, died 22 September 1933 aged 89 yrs."

General Notes: Village Storekeeper, Butcher, Gardener. (Surname sometimes GASKIN)
In 1874 he lived at 13 Summer Row, Birmingham, Warwick, England.
Times in England were hard, and attracted by glowing accounts of N.Z., Edward decided to emigrate to the comparatively new colony, leaving his wife and 4 children in England until he was able to send for them. He arrived in Wellington in 1877, but it was to be a year of hard work, mostly on construction work on the North Island main trunk railway, before he had accumulated sufficient funds to send for the family.
Came out in "Rakaia" to NZ on 27 August 1877, arriving Lyttleton 10 December with his sister, Emily WEIGHTMAN (who had married Joseph, a cousin). The ship then continued on to Wellington.
His wife, Emily (known as Emma) and 4 children were delayed leaving England as one of the children became ill with measles. They left on 25 July 1878 from Plymouth on the "City of Auckland". The NZ Shipping Co. endorsed her Contract Ticket to forward them at the Company's expense. The "City of Auckland" ran aground at the mouth of the Otaki River on 22 November 1878 as they thought Kapiti Island was the South Island. No lives were lost, and Edward collected his family from Otaki.
They settled in Feilding, left Palmerston North for Shannon in 1889, then to Apiti (east of Hunterville) in 1896.

Farm Labourer/Butcher
Canterbury Museum immigrant passenger index gives a Charles GASCOIGNE, 21, farm labourer, Nottingham, arrived on the 'Piako' on 5 March 1879. The 'Piako' sailed from Plymouth 1/10/1878, and arrived at Lyttelton 5/3/1879. The voyage took 155 days - they had fire damage which took 6 wks to repair at Pernambuco.
On the 'Piako' were Thomas BENNETT and his wife Rose; and his sister Zora Elizabeth who married Charles on their arrival at Lyttelton, NZ. - about 1879/80. They had about 6 children in Feilding, Sanson & Rangitikei.

Alwyn Gascoigne's account (grandson of Edward Gascoigne and Emma)
When Edward Gascoigne decided in 1876 to leave England on a journey, for him, of discovery in New Zealand he left behind him his wife Emma and four children Emily, Ellen (Nell), William and Alfred (my father) then an infant. Two years later he was able to send for them to come out.
Records in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington show that the sailing vessel City of Auckland was contracted to deliver Mrs Gascoigne and family x Warwickshire as 'Government assisted emigrants'. But sailing ships in those far days were subject to all the perils of the sea and the vessel was wrecked along with our family on the New Zealand coast above Otaki. For years a mast stood up above the sand and I recall quite vividly my father pointing this sight out to me as a very small boy as we traveled south one afternoon to Wellington on the 'Main Trunk'.
According to reports and documents studied in the Turnbull Library and which I assembled and copied we have this facsimile:
Gascoigne Emma (the mother)
Emily

William
Alfred (children)

Arrived NZ 22nd Oct 1878
A note to above dated 29th Oct 1878 stated: 'Landed Mrs Gascoigne and children and John Lane and the remainder sent on in the Hinemoa to Napier.
Mrs Gascoigne and the children and John Lane landed and sent to Foxton per 'Jane Douglas'. Joh Lane landed and sent to his doctor.'
Records at Alexander Turnbull further conveyed that when Mrs Gascoigne and the children were being put into the boat, the men behaved very badly and attempted to rush places. The Captain drew his revolver and held them off. Deposited on the beach mother and children were in first instance taken south by Maoris in a bullock wagon. My grandfather (Edward) was then in business at Shannon where he had established a butchery.

WRECK OF THE CITY OF AUCKLAND
The special of the New Zealander the telegraphs from Otaki:- “From the Captain of the City of Auckland I learn that she left London on the 13th July, and took immigrants at Plymouth; sailed finally on the 24th, and had a fair passage, making Cape Farewell on Tuesday morning, and Kapiti on Tuesday night, which island was taken for Stephens Island. It was blowing a hard north-west gale, accompanied with thick rainy weather. The vessel was beached at 8.45 p.m. on Tuesday. Rockets were fired, but nothing was done til daylight next morning, when one of the ship's lifeboats, with the aid of shore hands, succeeded in landing the whole of the immigrants and crew with safety. The stranding of the vessel was caused by mistaking Kapiti for Stephens Island. On making Kapiti, the vessel was put under topsails, and it was thought she was running through Cook Straits at he time of the accident. The ship was built by Blumer, Bros. Sunderland, in 1869, and was owned by Stewart and Simpson, London. She is, I believe, insured in a London office for L10,000. She is a wooden, and under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company. The number of immigrants on board was 240. During the voyage there was one birth and one death. Five days before the accident. One of the immigrants went mad and is now in close confinement. It will be impossible to launch the sip, but all light cargo and luggage will be saved. CAP. Fairchild says that nine out of ten ships mistake Kapiti for Stephens Island, and should a gale be blowing, it leaves very little chance to clear the shore after finding out the mistake. “

NICKNACKS VERSUS LIVES. - One incident on the City of Auckland disaster deserves to be recorded. Two boats were at work taking the passengers ashore, one manned by men from the ship, the other by the natives and pakehas from Otaki, under command of Mr Jenkins. The captain saw at a glance that the latter boat was worked far the best, and at once directed that the women and children were to be sent ashore with the Jenkins' crew. When the boat came alongside for the second batch of the immigrants, an individual connected with the ship appeared with a big heap of easy chairs, a collection of curiosities, a piano, and other knickknacks which he desired to put in the boat. He was at once met by a brave and stalwart pakeha, who said, €œwe come to save lives, not furniture”. The individual at once indignantly asked, “Who the mischief are you?” “Never mind who I am. Those things are not coming ashore in this boat.,” was the reply. “They shall!” roared the gentleman on board. “They shall not; and when you come ashore I'll hide you, and let you know who I am,” said the Colonial, showing a good arm. The individual subsided, and whether that piano, and those easy chairs and knicknacks are still on board, deponent saveth not. O tempora! O Mores! Easy chairs and fancy shells versus lives!.

Shipping Intelligence
The following telegram, from Otaki, was sent from Captain Ralls to the New Zealand Shipping Company at Wellington:-“City of Auckland ashore here; everybody landed; all safe. Waiting circumstances.” The City of Auckland sailed from Plymouth under charter to the New Zealand shipping Company on the 25th July, and was just 90 days out when she went ashore. She was loaded principally with railway material for the Government, and brought out 243 immigrants. The vessel is composite built;780 tons register, and is owned by Mr G. Simpson of London. On the instructions of Captain Rose, manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, a gang of men from Rakaia, and a lifeboat were shipped by the Hinemoa to render aid to the passengers of the city of Auckland if necessary.”

FURTHER PARTICULARS
(PRESS AGENCY)
Otaki, Oct. 25.
The City of Auckland is lying stem on to the beach buried about 8 feet in the sand. There is now only about 1 foot of water at her forehead at low water. Stern posts and fore part have gone. The mate and crew are still on board, not having been able to get off yesterday. There is no chance of the vessel being got off again; the sailors say they will be able to save all the luggage, but are not certain as to cargo. The Captain has ordered the sailors to dismantle the ship as soon as possible; the crew will be sent to Wellington; the Captain left for Wellington by coach.”

“From the statements of those who went down to Otaki…it appears that the immigrants, during their night's sojourn in Otaki, did behave in a very unruly and riotous manner. No damage was actually occasioned but the prospect of a disturbance of the peace was at times seriously threatened. The inhabitants of Otaki were apprehensive of trouble, and a number of special constables were sworn in. The immigrants were housed in the cottages, arrangements for their comfort and convenience, for the separation of the sexes, and for the preservation of order were made with despatch, and the Otaki people were most generous in their gifts of food and clothing. The resident constable received orders from Government to supply the immigrants with whatever was required in reason, and this was done. On Wednesday morning they again became very unruly, and trouble again appeared imminent, when orders came from the Government to proceed to Waikanae. They then left Otaki, the women (three of whom were very ill) in drays and carts, and the men on foot. The work of shipment into the Hinemoa commenced directly they arrived at Waikanae, and was carried out with as much despatch as possible. The Hinemoa sailed yesterday morning with the intention of taking the immigrants to Wellington, where they will be offered their choice of going to Napier or remaining. Report speaks very highly of the courage and generosity of the Otaki people in landing the immigrants from the wreck, saving their luggage, and ministering to their wants”

NAPIER, Oct. 28.
The City Of Auckland immigrants appear to be a quiet, well-behaved lot of people. When landed d from the Hinemoa on Saturday they looked in a sad condition, but they spoke in high terms of the treatment they had received at Otaki, both from the settlers and the natives. The latter in particular seemed as if they could not do enough for the immigrants. The voyage, up to the unfortunate disaster, had been exceedingly favourable, and there was little or no sickness. There was one birth and one death. They speak in high terms of the Doctor, Captain, and Officers.
A committee of ladies and gentlemen has been formed to see to the wants of the poor people, most of whom have only the clothes they stand in. The single men and girls are not quiteso badly off, but the married people, having to look after their children, could not get to save anything. A subscription list has been opened for their relief.”
