"He was the 10th child and first son, and had a stormy relationship with his father. His father encouraged him to emigrate, and to heal the rift between them, presented him with an apothecary set as a parting gift. He was also part owner of White Hart Inn, and sold his 1/3 share for £30,000.00 before emigrating in 1841.
Sailed from Gravesend on 17 Nov. 1841, and arrived on 10 April 1842 on 'London' at Nelson (aged 25). (Cabin passenger list in "London's" Passenger List, held in Stoke Museum.)
Embarked privately at Southampton so his name isn't on the ship's register with the Wakefield Company assisted immigrants from which are taken the names on Pioneer Memorial, Kaiteriteri.
He had bought land under the Wakefield scheme before leaving England (No. 12 Suburban East, Maitai Valley) but on arrival at Nelson found it mountainous and unsuitable. This land was partly sublet and was in crop by December 1842. After buying several sections, he built a house in the Maitai Valley.
He married Anna Torne FIFE in Nelson in 1844 in the Anglican church, and two children were born there - William & Agnes Clunie. (Anna came out on the same ship "London" with her mother, Mrs Agnes Allan, a widow with 7 children.)
Was a Chemist in Maitai Valley, Nelson & Tory St, Wellington; Shipping Agent in Melbourne, Australia; and Minister of Religion.
21 January 1845 - Proceeded with armed party to Happy Valley to protect surveyors from Chief Paramata. After exploring with Brunner & Major Heaphy, they settled in Matai Valley in a prefabricated 2-storey house brought out from England. Land company meetings of the time contain references and minutes pertinent to his attendance.
Then they moved to Sydney, Australia, with a view to instituting proceedings against the N.Z. Company re 'non fulfilment of contract' as they found the land unsatisfactory. He was given 3 Crown grants on 12 August 1856 (Aorore & Waitohi). The Crown it seems gave these grants when the NZ Co. got into difficulties and coult not deliver the goods. While there he was a Shipping Agent for McMeecken & Blackwood of Melbourne Sailing.
Finally in 1848/49 he and Anna moved to Wellington and lived in Ingestre St.
He set up business as a Chemist in Lambton Quay.
In the history of the Catholic Apostolic Church in Webb St, Wellington, it states that when William BISHOP was called by the Holy Spirit to be priest to the congregation in NZ, the services were first held in his house in a back room kept for the purpose, and the Webb St church was built later. The first church inside was beautiful fine wood, heavily carved; and the second church had smooth curving shapes, and colours in pale & dark blue.
William BISHOP began a shipping line in conjunction with some other Wellington fathers. The following four ships were registered under his name: 'Rangatira', 'Tui', 'Matau' & 'Huia'.
When he sold out, the new owners renamed the line 'NZ Shipping Co' (colours - green hull, red & black funnel). When he died, all ships in the harbour carried their flags at half mast.
He was a founder of Wellington College, and the library was a bequest from his son, Andrew Clunie BISHOP (1864-1937).
Died in 1884, and buried in Bolton St Cemetery, Wellington.

Lois KING (nee THANE) says: William was a quiet, shy man with a charming sense of humour, great love of nature and natural history, a choleric temper, and impatience of sham and chicainery. Ann Torne Fife was a great little lady, a good house-keeper, needlewoman and hostess. (I, Lois, had in my possession for years one of the Bembridge Lodge dance programmes with its little dangling pencil, and Bembridge Lodge printed in black.)
