General Notes: Ron is a retired Banker; and was employed by NatWest Bank Plc. He is active within the Baptist Church; and a member of a number of South London Churches.

Ron has provided a summary of his Pedigree, John - Robert - Frank - John - Ronald, as follows:

John Granger b 1787 d 1837 aged 49

John came from Stanton by Bridge in Derbyshire near to Swarkestone Bridge over the River Trent. John was trained as a 'stone carver' i.e. he was a marble mason. In Stanton today are the remains of stone quarries. Stanton is a common name in the Midlands - it means a place where stone is found i.e. quarried. By 1815 he had married Mary Smith, daughter of James Smith and Mary (nee Booth) and was a Baptist by persuasion - He taught in the Sunday school at nearby Hartshorn. Soon after his marriage Mary and John moved to a village named Sturston in the suburbs of the market town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire - it was here he came in conflict with the local squire by taking in the radical Cobbett's writings. It was a period when people in England were leaving the villages and going to the towns - the Luddite rioters were about this time revolting against authority and endeavouring to destroy the new framework knitting machines which they thought were taking away their livelihood. Many in England after 1815 were starving and the industrial revolution was bringing in great changes. In 1822 John and Mary went in haste to Nottingham fleeing the squire in Sturston, and were able temporarily to live with Mary's Father James Smith in St Mary's Gate, Nottingham (house still standing in 2000 - it is in the lace market area and there is a historic preservation order on the whole area to prevent demolition) Mary was carrying her 4th child Robert b 1822 at the time of the flight!!! John soon moved to Derby Road Nottingham and set up a marble mason business - he made gravestones for the Nottingham Cemetery which was very close to his yard. John and Mary had in all 11 children the last being born in 1836 - regrettably John died aged 49 bankrupt in 1837 - two traditions are -one that he fell out of a horse and trap - the other that he picked up the masons' desease due to the dust inhaled whilst chipping stone.
When John died bankrupt his widow Mary was greatly helped by James her father, and by George Baldwin her brother in law and her Uncles Booths (2 batchelors) of Kirkby Woodhouse, Notts.

Robert Granger b 1822 d 1899

Robert was taught to read and write by his Aunt Ann Smith b 800 d 1834. It was this Ann who wrote a diary which was printed after her death giving a remarkable insight into the life in Nottingham and Derbyshire in the early 19th century and in particular her experiences under the preaching of Rev Robert Smith her uncle, who pastored the Broad Street Baptist Chapel, Nottingham from 1816 until 1829 having previously been pastor of the Stoney St Chapel, Nottingham from 1780c until 1815.
Robert Granger was apprenticed to become a doctor but was also taught carpentry - he was a cabinet maker by trade. At age 15 his father died and this may be why he shortly afterwards left home and joined the Navy becoming a ships carpenter. He sailed to the West Indies and tradition has it he took the whip off a man there who was whipping a slave. Robert left the Navy around 1851 aged around 29 and married a young lady over the road from Derby Road Nottingham. Her name was Ann Hooten - her family had immigrated to UK from Paris and with the name Hooten must have originally been Dutch. Robert Granger and Ann Hooten were married in 1852 in Nottingham and immediately set sail for Australia. On the way there was a plague on the ship and Robert already having had yellow fever and having lost all his hair - he wore a wig from then on.- Robert seeing the need volunteered to move the bodies of the death over the side of the ship as he was not thought to have long to live himself. When Robert and Ann arrived in Australia - it took them 3 months by sailing boat to get there - Robert set up business in Melbourne and soon after went to Ballerat where the gold rush was happening. He is said to have found some gold and then lost it!!!! However, his carpentry was very useful in making log cabins for the miners at Ballerat. John and James his first 2 sons were born in Ballerat. Because of his Yellow Fever he found the Australian climate did not suit him and by 1860 he was on another sailing vessel to return to UK and Nottingham - there he had a daughter and 2 more sons, his youngest son Frank Granger. He lived to be 77 despite his yellow fever and died in Alfreton Road, Nottingham in 1899.

Frank Granger b 1867 d 1963

Frank was born in England in possibly Derby Road his grandmother Mary (nee Smith's) home but soon after the family moved to Alfreton Road, Nottingham. Frank was the youngest of the Granger family and was apprenticed to his Uncle Edmund Renals the proprietor of one of the Nottingham Newspapers. In 1897 Frank married Edith Letherland - they both worshipped in Palin Street Baptist Church, Hyson Green. Afterward they moved to Sheffield seeking work in the printing trade and soon after moved to Birmingham Edith, Frank's wife was trained as a teacher in Nottingham.
Still not finding suitable work in Birmingham, Frank and his 3 children, one then a baby, moved to Balham South West London - this was about 1905.- and obtained work on the Daily Mail soon after in Fleet Street, London, WC. He settled in Calborne Road, Balham and commuted by tram to the City. He later bought a 5 bedroom house in Louisville Road Balham.
Here Phyllis b 1903, John b 1904, Eileen b 1906 and later Robert b 1911 grew up.
They ie. The family attended Trinity Road Chapel, Earlsfield - later because Frank did night work on the papers in Fleet Street he became unpopular with the minister of this chapel who disagreed with folk working on Sundays - but Frank had to work Sundays to get the Monday papers out. So regretfully the family moved churches to Balham Congregational Church, where Eileen was in membership for well over 50 years.
Phillys married Hedley Welch a banker, and later Robert married Ruby Revell who died around 1940 of heart failure - he married again Andree Charnaux whom he met at the Commercial Banking Coy of Sydney where he worked in the City. .
Frank and Edith lived very long lives - they were married 65 years - they lived in Balham all their life but from the 1930s they had a summer bungalow to which all the grandchildren went on the seacoast near Bognor Regis at Elmer Stands, Sussex.

John Granger b 1904 d 1988
John was the second child of Frank and Edith. He was born in Birmingham but grew up in Balham - he was a champion swimmer with the Boys' Brigade. He left school around 15 years and was apprenticed first to a motor charaban maker. In those days charabans (now called coaches) were in their infancy - all of them had solid tyres for a start. Dad enjoyed working on cars all his life afterwards. Frank did not want his son to continue in this trade as he thought it would not support him So John was trained again for the printing industry. He was a monotype caster, i.e. he worked the machine which made the type which was used in book printing for many years. John married Irene Florence Bradford after meeting at a tennis match - Rena short for Irene was trained as a jeweller and worked in Hatton Garden, for some years the centre of the jewellery trade in London.
They married in 1931 and moved out to Morden, Surrey, on the fringe of London. Dad worked in the printing industry all his life and had a very happy retirement afterwards.
Morden then was on the fringe of London and they had two children Ronald b 1936 and Janet born 1940. During the 2nd world war the family were evacuated like hundreds of other families to the country - we went to Bournemouth where Rena's mother and father lived in their retirement. Mum and Dad lived long and enjoyable lives and celebrated their golden wedding in 1981 just before their first grandchild was born in 1982.

Ronald Granger b 1936
Whose own "potted" History is as follows:

Ronald Francis Granger b 26.12.1936 in Morden, Surrey, UK
The first thing I can just about remember is going into the shelter in the garden every evening in Morden during the Blitz of World War 2 - I thought it real fun as a boy of 3 or 4 looking up and seeing the planes going overhead and hearing the guns - rather sad my innocence was eventually shattered when aged 8 evacuated to Bournemouth on the South Coast I heard a mosquito bomber had crashed about a mile away and Grandad told us all of the gruesome details he had seen - from then on I was a scared young boy until the end of the war. After the war I wondered what would happen. Fires in the streets with street parties in 1945 to celebrate the Allies victory.
We continued to live in Morden and due to the war our education was well behind schedule - by about the age of 13 I had caught up somewhat and passed a scholarship to go to a Commercial School at Hinchley Wood, Surrey. This school was excellent for a commercial training, learning typing, shorthand, arithmetic, accounting and so much more. I left school in 1954 and my Uncle introduced me to Westminster Bank. Here I worked in Blackfriars in the City of London until I was called up for National Service in 1955. This was quite an experience - I managed to get in the RAF band to avoid squarebashing - soon I was in Yorkshire, North England in the Admin Section typing away and doing shorthand for the Group Captain and other officers - chasing rabbits on the runway was a hoot whilst on guard duty. After 9 months I obtained a transfer to a maintenance unit near Birmingham and eventually was discharged in 1957. Back I went to Westminster Bank, this time to High Holborn in City of London, I moved around a number of branches until eventually becoming an Assistant Manger in Bishopsgate Office in the City - my task was to control a number of staff working on essential banking activities. I retired after over 45 years service in 1999 aged 62.
Celia and I met through the bank - she worked in Barnet area - we married in 1979 and moved to Sutton, Surrey where Hilary was born in 1982 and Wendy in 1985.
All my life I have had contact with the local Baptist Church. I first went along in 1945 sent by my parents and in 1957 joined the Boys Brigade Company at Morden Baptist Church - this was a great organisation - eventually I reached the rank of sergeant before leaving for National Service. I became a committed Christian about this time and a member of the church after believers baptism in 1956. Eventually after serving voluntarily in various tasks in the church I took over the Junior Section of the Boys Brigade which I continued to run until I married Celia. We then moved to Sutton and joined a local church - as it did not have Boys Brigade I served in other ways - Assistant Treasurer for one. - Bankers tend to get these jobs in churches!! - we are now in Cheam Baptist Church which has BB and guess what I am Boys' Brigade Treasurer.
My interest in the family tree was kindled by my grandfather Francis Granger b 1967 died 1963 whose life span was so long that he could remember seeing Gladstone. He, in course of time explained to me the family history - especially the "Baptist" background - after his death in 1967 I did a tour of the Midlands and visited the family vault, the Baptist chapels associated with the family - met distant relatives - and truly the bug of family history became a wonderful hobby.
These were the days before computers when one used to get the St Catherine House in London and get St Catherine's elbow from lifting so many volumes of books containing births, marriages and deaths etc. Nowadays it is so much easier says Celia on the computer.
Currently we are awaiting on 19th August the wedding of Wendy our daughter to Edward Hunter. I wish to thank Howard and others for all the information they have painlessly worked at to produce a fine website.
