General Notes: In a Medley Pedigree, received from Marcus Whittaker in September 2011, he included the following:
'Maples of Spalding. By Rev. Richard Taylor (Notebook) transcribed by Cranleigh Harper Barton.
'There were three brothers. Two of them were William and Thomas Maples, the latter the grandfather of Mr. William Maples of the Elms, Liverpool. The third lived at Ravenby [sic: act: Navenby], Lincolnshire, in the Manor House. He was the steward and had also a large farm.
He had been bitten by a dog and was recommended to bathe in the sea. This was on the rent day when there was a grand dinner given to all the tenants and he as a matter of course was obliged to be present.
That morning he and one of his brothers rose early and went to bathe in the sea near Scaigness. They got into the water and a sudden fog came on. When the brother had finished and dressed he called to his companion but without receiving a reply. He searched everywhere but in vain for him. He therefore went back to the house for help.
They found the body frozen stiff near the water's edge. Poor man, he could not find his clothes and thus appears to have miserably perished. This took place in the month of March. Instead therefore of returning to the dinner he was brought home dead.
He left a widow and young family. Mrs. Frances Fox, my wife's mother was one of the daughters. The brother who went to bathe with him died young. The poor widow did not survive her husband many years but died in a fit while quite young. She had 7 children: two sons and five daughters [sic: act: 8 children: two sons and six daughters] viz William [sic: act: Valentine], Thomas Austin (a lawyer) [only mention of: Austin], Mrs. Picken [sic: act: Picker], Mrs. Rodgers, 2 Mrs. Winters, and Mrs. Frances Fox whose husband [John Fox III (1748-1817)] also died in a fit at Shefford in Bedfordshire, whilst on a journey. His father lived at St. Ives and his grandfather was a solicitor of Suffolk.
