1. William HYSLOP [47353] was born in 1743 and died on 26 May 1803 at age 60.

Noted events in his life were:

• Residence: Lochend in Kirkudgrightshire, later called Lotus.

William married Jean MAXWELL [47354] [MRIN: 16987] on 05 Oct 1769. Jean died on 16 Jul 1815.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 2 M    i. John HYSLOP [47352] was born on 12 Aug 1770 and died on 19 Oct 1835 at age 65.

   3 F    ii. Jean HYSLOP [47355] died in 1811 in Jamaica.

   4 M    iii. Wellwood HYSLOP [47356] was born in 1780 and died in 1845 at age 65.

General Notes: Attributed to Barbara Horbury is the following:
Wellwood HYSLOP, whose memorial is in St. Michael's Churchyard in Dumfries, was the eighth of fourteen children of William HYSLOP. The memorial is huge, at the far end of the wall on the left as you enter the gate. Now rather decrepit, it lists the names of Wellwood's parents and all their children. I found the following entry in the Wigtown Free Press of 17th. April 1845,_in the Ewart Library, Dumfries. (Please remember the language is not mine) We have to record the death of Wellwood Hyslop Esq., merchant in Kingston, Jamaica, and many years Member of the Assembly for the parish of Port Royal. He expired suddenly on the forenoon of the 16th. February last. Mr. Hyslop was a native of Dumfries. Many years ago he went abroad, and for the last forty years had been a merchant in Kingston. His integrity of character was universally admired, and his sudden death will be generally felt, not only by his afflicted widow and infant son but a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The London Times of the 26th. ult. in noticing the bereavement says " Mr. Hyslop's name is associated with that of Simon Bolivar, the Liberator of Columbia. He escaped death in Carthagena in 1815, to which the bloody General Morilla had condemned him, for his financial services to Bolivar, but was spared to exert himself for long in advancing the interests of Jamaica, where his death is much regretted."
