7. Elizabeth MILLEDGE [52679] (Sophia LANGLEY4, David Cyrus1) was born in Sep 1822, was baptised on 5 Oct 1822 in Parramatta Church of England Colony of New South Wales, died in 1900 in "Taurie" Nr. Bathurst Colony of New South Wales at age 78, and was buried in Bathurst Cemetery Colony of New South Wales.

General Notes: In a Package of Documents provided by Patricia Wilma [Easdown] McPherson in April 2008, was the Story of Elizabeth Millage and her Husband Samuel Smith, as follows:

ELIZABETH MILLAGE (1822 - 1900) and her husband SAMUEL SMITH (c.1812 - 1866)

The Parramatta Church of England baptism register for the 5th October 1822 records that Elizabeth was the daughter of convict Richard Millage and his wife Sophia. However, Elizabeth was reared at "Charlton" on the Campbells River along with Sophia's second daughter Lucy Ann, as a daughter of Thomas Arkell.
In 1839, at the age of 17, she married Samuel Smith, a settler of the Campbells River, at the Presbyterian Church at Bathurst. Samuel, an Englishman from Gloucestershire, was the sixth child of the yeoman, Thomas Smith of Weston-sub-Edge and his wife Alley Pearce. It is probable that he arrived in New South Wales in 1837 and settled on the Campbells River near Rockley. An entry in an old book sighted many years ago at his homestead, Mulgunnia, near Trunkey Creek, indicated that he had been on officer on a sailing ship. It is not known whether he could have been a naval or a military officer. No record has yet been found of his arrival in New South Wales, or proof of his previous profession.
Thomas Arkell was very generous to the young couple. Following their marriage, Elizabeth received 1607 acres at Mulgunnia Creek to provide her with an independent security. 640 acres of this land, "Mu1gunnia " , became the Smith's family homestead for another four generations. Also at this time, Samuel received four properties from Arkell. These were Corowa, The Grove, Trunkies Valley and River Station, a total of 3084 acres. All these properties were later entailed by Arkell to the three eldest of Elizabeth and Samuel's children.
The early years of Elizabeth's married life were spent at Charlton whilst Samuel helped manage Thomas Arkell's affairs for him. The Smith family later received further property in compensation and for satisfaction of service. On Arkell's death, Samuel was co-executor of his will, along with Lucy Ann's husband Charles Marsden McPhillamy.
Samuel and Elizabeth eventually took up residence at "Mu1gunnia" although they also owned other residences in Sydney. One excellent property, Austenham House, was situated at Long Cove [now Iron Cove]. Part of the Rozelle Hospital boundary is now located on the old site. This house was sold in 1863 when they purchased Albion House at Millers Point. Albion House stood near the present site of the Sydney Port Operations Control Tower. It was described as a magnificent villa of eight rooms erected by the architect Henry Cooper. It had previously changed hands several times before being acquired by the Smiths. Their lifestyle must have been very pleasant in this fine large home overlooking Sydney Harbour.
Samuel grazed large flocks of sheep on his country properties, some of which he leased to other graziers. He was also active in the purchasing and selling of land and it was on an expedition exploring for new grazing lands on the Upper Darling River in 1856 that his party was attacked by aborigines. Samuel was speared between his shoulder and neck. The spear pierced the bone and could not be immediately extracted. It was several months later and only after many attempts by doctors in the Bathurst district and later in Sydney that the point of the spear was finally removed.
Even after suffering this traumatic experience he continued to expand his properties, taking up land at Cunnamulla, Queensland in 1863. There he had three runs, Trunkey, Hariman, and Chance, totalling 250 square miles. These properties were later sold to Cobb and Co.
Elizabeth was 44 years of age at the time of Samuel's death and their youngest child only 4~. According to the birth certificate of this child, Florence, Samuel and Elizabeth had 16 children, seven boys and nine girls. Some were born in Sydney, others over the mountains. Birth records of only 11 of these children have been found in the NSW Archives, perhaps several were lost at birth. Four of those who survived to adulthood predeceased Elizabeth. Although her life may have been affluent it was not without tragedy.
Following Samuel's death, Elizabeth carried on and managed her family's affairs and also assisted with her mother's. She sold Albion House and moved, firstly to Glebe, then later to Parramatta. In 1881 she sold the 640 acre property of Mulgunnia to her eldest son Thomas Arkell Smith. Although the estate had been entailed to Thomas, the encumbrance had previously been withdrawn.
In January 1900 at the age of 77, Elizabeth died of cardiac failure at "Taurie", the Bathurst property of her third son, George Sidney Smith. She is buried with her husband Samuel, in the Church of England cemetery at Bathurst.

Elizabeth married Samuel SMITH [52678] [MRIN: 18776], son of Thomas SMITH [52714] and Alley PEARCE [52715], in 1839 in Presbyterian Church Bathurst Colony of New South Wales. Samuel was born in 1812, died in 1866 in "Mulgunnia" Mulgunnia Creek Colony of New South Wales at age 54, and was buried in Bathurst Cemetery Colony of New South Wales.

General Notes: In an e-Mail received from Mark Turnbull on September the 15th, 2011, he included the following:
Samuel Smith spent his early years of married life as Manager for Thomas Arkell (Elizabeth Millage's adopted father) at "Charlton" near Bathurst. He inherited land from Arkell, later residing at "Mulgunnia" (South of "Charlton" and also owned by Arkell). In 1855, Frederick Darling's baptism entry gives Samuel's occupation as "Gentleman" and his location as "Austenham" which was his home in Sydney. He bought and sold land on the Upper Darling River and in Queensland. He was speared by a trusted black boy while near the Lower Lachlan River en route to Cunnamulla where he had property, possibly while trying to establish a stock route for his cattle.
