134. Gladys LATIMER [45543] (Roynon Jones Washington (Rev.)9, Digby8, Edward7, John6, David5, Robert4, James3, John2, James1) was born in 1888 in Breamore Hampshire England and died in 1979 at age 91.

General Notes: Gladys married Frederic William Carey on 17th June 1912. Breamore, Hants. Her husband returned to Shanghai (where he was part of the Chinese Maritime Commission by ship. Gladys and Dorothy (always known as Dodo) took the scenic route - the inaugural trip of the Trans Siberian Railway. Dodo never married, but remained with her sister and brother-in-law until the latter died. The girls' personalities complemented each other's, Gladys being quiet and shy, Dodo being considered "rather fast." Attending and organising and hostessing parties were an important facet of colonial life, especially for the women for whom there was little else, Dodo loved them, was considered "great fun" and "rather a Wiz" on the organising / hostessing side, while even having to attend them was agony for Gladys. They looked alike and dressed alike, and if Dodo wasn't (Shock! Horror!) smoking she could easily deceive people into believing her to be Gladys! There was a suspicion that Dodo fell head over heels in love with Frederic at the same time as Gladys did, for why else didn't she take the opportunities for marriage that must have presented themselves to a beautiful English girl out east?
After Frederic died, it was Dodo who found jobs for herself and her niece Helen with British-American Tobacco to support the family. During the Japanese occupation of Shanghai the two sisters were interned for the duration of the war with those other European women who had left leaving too late. They were luckier than most, because Gladys's daughter Cynthia, having married a neutral (Norwegian) was not interned with them, so could visit occasionally with little luxuries like soap, cigarettes, chocolates or new clothes.
After the war they moved to Australia with the Thoresens and lived at North Brighton. Post Traumatic Stress took its toll on Dodo and after years of looking after her sister and her family she got dementia. She kept packing a suitcase and racing up the street in the belief that the Japanese were about to invade and her determination NOT to be interned by them again.

Gladys married Frederic William CAREY [45545] [MRIN: 16323] on 17 Jun 1912 in Breamore Hampshire England. Frederic was born in 1874 in Devizes Wiltshire England and died on 06 Jan 1931 in Shanghai Shanghai China at age 57.

General Notes: Frederic William Carey was born in Stratford-sub-castle near Devises in 1874, son of a yeoman farmer. At 15 he was apprenticed to a corn merchant, which he found stultifyingly boring. He ran away to sea, but soon learned a sailor's life was not his cup of tea either. He jumped ship in Shanghai. Fortunately his father knew Rev. R.J.W. Latimer, who lived in Breamore Rectory, which was next door to Breamore House where the Hulses lived, RJW "had a word" with Sir Reginald Hulse. who put in a word with someone in the Chinese Customs service who consequently took young Carey under his wing. This was the challenge he needed, and there was no stopping him. When he returned to England "on Leave" what could be more natural than that he should pay a thank you visit to his benefactors, and there he met his bride to be and her twin sister. He did so well in the Customs Service that he was able to return to England on early retirement. Unfortunately he invested his money unwisely, lost the lot and the only way of earning something to survive on was to return to China. Having to start again from scratch at 40+ was too much for him, and he died in Shanghai on 6th January 1931.

General Notes: At the time of her marriage, Sarah was living at 5 High Street,Workington, Cumbria.
She was a great one for talking about her family history, and I recall her saying that her mother's family, the Danson's, were Sea Captain's, (a fact which I have since verified) who came over to England from Denmark, sailing around the top of Scotland and landing at Whitehaven, in Cumbria.Whilst on the the journey Captain William Danson's wife gave birth to a daughter, whom they called Thisbe after the name of the ship 'The Thisbe.'
She also told of how one morning her young sister Jean woke up and told her mother that she had had a strange dream. I think that she was about 5or 6 at the time. She said that she had gone through seven gates, each one being more ornate than the last. When she had gone through the seventh she was surrounded by friendly people, including several children. After describing these people, her mother recognised them as dead family members. One child in particular struck her as being a child who had died just before her daughter had been born. She thought the dream rather perculiar but dismissed it. Seven days later, on her wayhome from school, Jean became ill. She grew rapidly worse, and sadly died later that day. Then her mother recalled the seven gates, each of which could be seen to have implied a day of life which her daughter had left, and the people through the seventh were in heaven! I recall very vividlymy grandmother telling me this family story.

Sarah married Charles William SANDERSON [8268] [MRIN: 4041] on 06 Jun 1936 in Evangelical Church Gordon Street Workington Cockermouth Cumbria England. Charles was born on 20 Jul 1912 in Atcham Shropshire England and died on 30 Jul 1997 in Lytham St Anne's Lancashire England at age 85.

At the time of his marriage,Charles was living at 59 Thirlmere Avenue, Newlands, Workington, Cumbria. He would have been living in the parish for a time in order to get married there. He was a Poultry Farmer at the time of his marriage. After his marriage he moved with his wife, Sarah, back to Lytham St. Annes, and worked as a Coal Merchant, in partnership with Mr. Gilbert Alder.
