General Notes: An eMail from Ann Kinross says:
"Thomas Latimer (4. David, 2. John, 1. James) went to Virginia in America, and married Margaret STEURMAN, meaning "Tax man" in German. Her sister later became the SECOND wife of WASHINGTON the American General". Presumably this is intended to be George Washington, American General and 1st President, but he married only ONCE, quite late in life. He was his wife's 2nd HUSBAND. Her maiden name was Dandridge, married name CUSTIS. I have employed genealogical researchers in America to find a Steurman/Sturman connection to Dandridge and/or Custis without success. I have also searched through back copies of the William and Mary Quarterly of Virginia held at Adelaide University library (via inter-library loan) in which is recorded genealogies of virtually every Virginian and found neither. There was a STURMAN family early settlers of Maryland where they were extremely prominent (which means they at least emigrated to America as Catholics), and by Thomas Latimer's time they had moved to Virginia (implying they had become protestants by then), but no link to George Washinton or Thomas Latimer, no Martha (Washington's wife) and no Margaret, although there was SAID to be a Margaret Sturman of the family, living in England. On the handwritten document holding our family tradition I noticed that what we have ALL ALWAYS assumed to be "Washington" had been interpreted as "MASHINGTON" by Hugh Gleeson & Bob Glover, and what we'd assumed to be a capital "W" was identical with the capital "M's elsewhere in the document, which produces 2 questions -
1) WAS there an American General MASHINGTON at the time, and if so
2) WHY have the names "George" and "Washington" become family names instead of "Mashington"?
