Latimer, Frederic (1814-1870)

The diarist's youngest and eighth surviving brother, Frederic, was born in Oxford on 11 July 1814 and baptised on 15 July at All Saints Church. When Mary's diary commences on 1 October 1821, he is seven and boarding at Park Hill School in Bath. He was the second brother who did not go to university, suggesting that his older brother Charles may have already been ailing in the early 1830s and that he was chosen in his stead to take over the family business just at the time that he might have gone to university. He was made a Freeman of the City of Oxford on 13 July 1838, and began to run the family wine business around the time of his father's death in 1845. In 1846 he put an advertisement in Hunt's Oxford Directory for "Frederic Latimer & Co., Wine & Spirit Merchants, 11 & 12 High Street, Oxford". Under his father's will, he also received two one-twelfth shares in the Headington estate, and his estate at Holloway near Birmingham consisting of land and ground rents.

Frederic married Mary Ann Elizabeth Jones (usually called Marianne) in December 1846 at Edgeworth in Gloucestershire (where her uncle was vicar), and between 1847 and 1864 they baptised thirteen children (of whom six died in infancy) at St Andrew's Church, Headington. They initially lived at Church House (16 St Andrew's Road), and Marianne's mother, Mrs Elizabeth Ann Jones, also came to live in Headington: she can be found lodging with John Medcalf the blacksmith and his wife at the time of the 1851 census.

Frederic was Churchwarden of St Andrew's Church in Headington in 1867, but at some time in the late 1860s he and his family moved to the present 53 Iffley Road, where Frederic died at the age of 56. His body was brought back to Headington for burial at St Andrew's Church on 9 September 1870. Frederic's widow, Marianne, moved to the present 123 Iffley Road by 1875, and to 117 Iffley Road (with her spinster daughter Caroline) by 1891; on 21 February 1895 was buried at St Andrew's Church, 25 years after her husband. There is no sign at the church today of their tomb, or that of their children.

The Latimer family wine business was taken over by Frederic's eldest son, Edward Hugh Latimer. But he died in June 1876 at the age of 28, leaving his wife, Annie, with two young children and another on the way. It seems likely that he had been ill for a while, because over a year before his death, on 25 March 1875, the Reverend William Latimer and others sold the premises at 10-12 High Street to the Vice-Chancellor and others for £8,300. The front portion facing the street was sold immediately: presumably to Mr J. Long, another wine merchant, who is listed in directories from 1882.

The seven children of Frederic's who reached adulthood were Edward Hugh (1847-1876), Frederick Nichol (1850-1891+), Caroline Emily (1853-1896), Florence Marian (Mrs Hugh de Spear) (1853-1891+), Louisa Frederique (Mrs
William Rouse) (1858-1891+), Roynon Charles Washington (1860-c.1930), and D'Oyley Fleetwood (1864-1891+). Roynon was the only one of Frederick's children to go to university (he matriculated at St Alban Hall, Oxford, on 4 February 1881) and he became curate of Wilsford with Woodford in Wiltshire in 1890. Caroline initially inherited all the portraits of the Latimer family, and on her death in 1896 her brother Roynon inherited the portrait of their grandfather Edward Latimer, while her sister Mrs Florence de Spear inherited all the rest.

Frederic married Mary Anne Elizabeth JONES [43778] [MRIN: 15768], daughter of G JONES [45055] and Elizabeth Ann [45054], in Dec 1846 in Edgeworth Gloucestershire England. Mary died in 1895 and was buried on 21 Feb 1895 in St Andrew's Headington Oxfordshire England. Another name for Mary was Marianne.

The Routledge family are an old Border Clan, who originated in the Bewcastle area of Cumbria. I can trace John's ancestors back to a Richard Routledge (b1731) of Irthington, which is about 8 miles from Bewcastle. Richard's wife was Margaret Latimer, and they married at Kirklinon on the 12th April, 1764. The Latimer's were an old Kirklinton family, and a common family name was Hugh. Therefore it would seem likely that there may be a connection with Bishop Hugh Latimer.
