Since the 1960s there have been very few prominent Australians descended from the leading settlers of the first half-century of European habitation in New South Wales. Indeed, of the ninety-three pioneer families recognised by L. M. Mowle(1), possibly only five, the Cowpers (arrived 1809), the Streets (1822), the Stephens (1824), the Windeyers (1828) and the Fairfaxes (1838), produced representatives, prominent in public life, over the succeeding four or five generations. For over fifty years Norman Lethbridge Cowper, Kt, CBE, BA, LLB, was the scion of the Cowper family. He was born on 15 September 1896(2) at `Wairua' in Wyvern Street, Chatswood, New South Wales as the third and last child of Cecil Spencer de Grey and Alice Mary Cowper, nee Dodd who had married at Kew, Victoria, on 10 October 1888. His sister, Olive Lethbridge, had died on 22 February 1892 aged twenty-seven months and his brother, Colin Templar, on 20 September 1910 aged eighteen years.(3) His pioneer ancestor, William Cowper (1778-1858), arrived in Sydney as a missionary on 18 August 1809 on the Indispensable and was subsequently appointed Archdeacon of Cumberland(4). His son, the Honourable Sir Charles Cowper (1807-1875) was Premier of New South Wales(5) and his grandson, the Honourable Charles Cowper (1834-1911), was Sheriff of New South Wales(6) and the grandfather of Sir Norman. Norman Cowper's second name derived from his paternal grandmother, Mary Cowper (1834-1894), a daughter of Robert Copeland Lethbridge (17981865) who arrived in Sydney on the Cumberland on 24 January 1827. A leading pastoralist, he had married Mary King (1805-1872), a daughter of Captain Phillip Gidley King (1758-1808), Governor of New South Wales from 1800 to 1806. King, a great-great grandfather of our subject, had arrived on the Sirius in the First Fleet and was present when the foundation of the Colony was proclaimed on 26 January 1788.(8). Cecil Cowper was admitted as a solicitor on 12 March 1887 and was a partner in the firm Stephen, Jacques & Stephen until 1902 when he transferred to Allen Allen & Hemsley. His family lived at `Wairua' until 1910 when they moved to `Hillside' at 412, Edgecliff Road, Woollahra. In 1915, they lived in `The Howard', a boarding-house in Bayswater Road, Darlinghurst, and in 1916 moved into an apartment in `Beaufort Court' at 200 Forbes Street in the same suburb.(9) On 18 June 1919, aged only 55, Cecil Cowper fell victim to the epidemic of pneumonic influenza which ravaged Sydney. His wife was in her ninety-first year when she died on 25 January 1957. At the age of nine, Norman Cowper was sent to the Chatswood Preparatory School (later, Mowbray House School) run by Mr L. Bavin in Mowbray Road, Chatswood.(10) He boarded at the school in 1908 and in February 1909 entered Sydney Grammar School, so continuing a family association begun when Sir Charles Cowper introduced the Bill in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the foundation of the school in 1854. His first headmaster was A. B. Weigall (1840-1912) who had also taught Cecil Cowper there. At Sydney Grammar he came to the fore in his final year, 1914. Then he was secretary of the Debating and the Musical and Dramatic Societies and a member of staff of the Sydneian. As first speaker for the debating team he won the prize for oratory, which caused the Sydneian to note `he advanced greatly in fluency, developed some capacity for extempore speech, was logical in thought and spoke to the point simply and directly'.(11) He was made a prefect on 3 April 1914.(12) In the Leaving Certificate, he gained honours in English, Latin and Modern History and was awarded a Public Exhibition.(13) He was the School's Salting Exhibitioner for 1915, which brought him an annuity of 20 [pounds sterling] in the Faculty of Arts at Sydney University. At Sydney University, he read English, Philosophy and History in 1915, 1916 and 1917, graduating Bachelor of Arts in December 1917. He gained a distinction in History II but inflammation of the eyes, resulting from juvenile rheumatic fever, prevented him from completing honours.(14) He was prominent in undergraduate activities. In all three years he was a member of the Debates Committee of the Union and in 1916 was a joint secretary of the House Committee. In 1916 and 1917 he led Arts against Law (led by H. V. Evatt) in the inter-faculty debating final. In 1917 he was also business secretary of Hermes and secretary of the hockey club. In March 1917 he was elected the representative of Arts II and III on the Undergraduates' Association (the precursor of the Students' Representative Council), and in October 1917 he...
