Donald Murray MACKAY [12908] (Andrew6, Andrew2, Unknown1) was born 21 Dec 1843 in Loneachuan Sutherland Scotland, was christened 01 Jan 1844 in Bonar Bridge Sutherland Scotland, died 28 Oct 1907 in Khandalklah Wellington New Zealand at age 63, and was buried in Karori Cemetery Wellington New Zealand.
General Notes:Born 21 Dec. 1843 in Loneachuan, Sutherland, Scotland. Chr. 1 Jan. 1844 at Bonar Bridge (from John Murray's Bible)
Came to NZ in 1866 on the ship "William Davie". He went to Queenstown with the BNZ until his appointment as first Manager of the BNZ in Arrowtown. He also served at Akaroa.
Married Harriet Mary ROSS in 1870 in Alexandra, Otago, NZ., and she died in 1881 in Dunedin when her youngest child was 5 years old.
They had 4 children - William, Andrew, Catherine & Elspeth between 1871 & 1877.
He married again in 1882 to Robertas (Robina) Patterson in Temuka. They had 4 more children - John, Harriet, Hugh & Margaret between 1883 - 1893.
He settled in Wellington in 1898, and died in 1907 in Khandallah,Wellington aged 63, and is buried in Karori Cemetery, Wellington with his wife, his son, John, and John's wife Margaret.

His son, Andrew's Probate Record states he was a Farmer in Albury,Canterbury on his deathin 1942.
His son, William, was a Farmer in Cromwell, Dunedin on his death in 1948.

He couldn't bear to to work just anywhere, so he bought a small farm at Ohariu Valley, Wellington, where he had a few cows. He used to bring his milk to Khandallah and deliver it to the Fleming family.
Clan Book states he married Mollie NICHOLAS, and had no family.

Crofted at Lonachuan on 4 acres of poor moorland soil. They had cows, a horse, pigs, sheep, hens and ducks. The staple diet was porridge, potatoes and cheese plus milk. She baked scones and oat-cakes. She made her own butter & cheese. She also had a spinning wheel.
They used to cut peat and stack them. She attended Gaelic services.
The Mackays came from Ross-shire and, after the wreck, they came to Sutherlandshire, and it was they who dug the first sod at Lonachuan (Andrew Mackay and Elspeth Murray).
