In his youth he was a great friend of John Keble (1792-1866) the Anglican clergyman and poet who began the Oxford Movement, encouraging a return to High Church Ideals.
He was a prominent member of the Tractarians (Tractarianism: Oxford Movement), and also corresponded with Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890), Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), and William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), British statesman and future Prime Minister (1868-74, 1880-5, 1886, 1892-4). It was the last named who is credited with the remark that John Medley had "the wisest head that ever wore a mitre".

Before going to Canada, John had some training in Architecture and had founded the Exeter Diocesan Architectural Society, of which he was the secretary. He was involved in rebuilding, refurbishing and erecting a number of churches. This background greatly helped him in the planning and building of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton, for which he was largely responsible.

1863 After a trip to England he brought home 42-year-old Margaret Hudson, of Devonshire, to marry, she had been a friend to the Medleys when his first wife was alive, and they had remained friends after her death.
May 1864 The Bishop purchased Bishopscote on Church Street, where he and his 2^nd wife resided until their deaths (in 1892 and 1905 respectively).

Summer 1889 He attended the Lambeth Pan-Anglican Conference, and was made an Honorary L.L.D. of Cambridge and D.D. of Durham.
He wrote a number of devotional works. Author of the 'Episcopal Form of Church Government' 1835; of two volumes of 'Sermons' (published by request of many of his late parishioners) 2 eds. 1845; and of ' A Commentary and Translation of the Book of Job' 1860; with the Rev. H. J. Cornish he translated 'The Homilies of St. John Chrysostom on the Corinthians' (vol. iv. of the 'Library of the Fathers,' Oxford, 1838); he also composed a few anthems.
He possessed one of the most important private libraries of 19^th century New Brunswick. His collection of about 3,000 books included books on theology, literature, travel, music and architecture, in several languages. It was one of the most extensive collections of the time for the area. In 1904 his widow distributed most of the books to the six deaneries that then made up the diocese. She attached bookplates that read "From the library of the late Most Rev. John Medley, D.D., Bishop of Fredericton and Metropolitan of Canada. Presented to [the recipient] by Mrs. Medley."

General Notes: She was at one time engaged to a well-pedigreed youth of 23 either an officer in the army or the son of a member of parliament. However, he died after breaking a blood vessel at the graveside of his sister's funeral.
She then became a nurse. There is a Medley family legend that she trained and nursed with Florence Nightingale.
Towards the end of the Bishop's long life, when he refused to retire despite failing powers, she was said to have been the true Administrator of the Bishop's office.
