32. John SMITH [3551], son of John SMITH [3555] and Martha FRANK [3556], was born on 4 May 1795 in Tydd St Giles Cambridgeshire England, died on 5 Jan 1870 in March Cambridgeshire England at age 74, and was buried on 8 Jan 1870 in March Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: Father came from Tydd St.Giles in CAMBRIDGESHIRE. Son was a Corn Miller in March, CAMBS. John (this one) also probably lived in Tydd St. Giles. His third Wife, Mary Dent STANGER, was from Tydd St.Mary, LINCOLNSHIRE. However, Since his Son, John Stanger-Smith was Married in St.Ives, and HIS first Child was Born Nth. Witchford, CAMBS. in late 1862, THEN during the period 1832 (when He and Mary Dent Stanger were Married) and 1862 the Family may have moved, possibly in stages from Tydd St.Giles to March.
NEXT STEPS:
1. Search 1841 If Family living there at that time, try 1851 Census for Tydd St.Giles. Also try 1841 Census of Tydd St.Mary, LINCS. for traces of Stangers. Furthermore look for any mention of John and Martha SMITH and Children. (unlikely) John and Mary Dent SMITH and Children; and for John Stanger-SMITH and Emma (ULPH) and Family after she left home and married in 1860. Note: Emma shows in the St.Ives Census Records for the ULPH Family in 1841 and 1851. Since she was Married in 1860, she is not shown in the St.Ives Census for 1861; but may appear in Nth. Witchford. Also look for the Stanger (or Dent) Families in Tydd St.Mary in LINCOLNSHIRE. 1841 Census Records for Tydd-St.Giles, Ref.241227, ordered from the Mormon Library at Greenwich, Apr. 23, 1988. As of June 7, 1841 Census does not show any trace of John Smith and Mary; but maybe??? includes John Smith Snr. Tydd-St.Giles Census is divided into two Sections. The first (Western) Section is O.K.; but the Second (Eastern) Section is mostly illegible. Details of Smiths recorded are listed under the File D: Data Census.doc Access it through Word for Windows. The only John Smith in this Census who may be "ours" is the (very faint) J.S. living near "The Rectory". His age is recorded as 18; but may well be 78. The illegible Section of the Census is very hard to read. However, it is probable that MOST Family Names can be identified. There is about a 80-85% chance that our John Smith was not living there in 1841.

1841 Census Records for March (Doddington) Ref. No. 241228 was inspected at the Mormon Library Greenwich on Oct.28, 1988. From Information supplied by Laurette [Davey] MacWhirter, in January 2004:-
The 1841 Census at South Ockenden [HO 107/324]

George Sibley 30 Ag.Labourer
Hannah Sibley 20
Samuel Ketley 55 Ag.Labourer - Father of Hannah Sibley
Samuel Sibley 15 Brother of Hannah Sibley

George married Hannah KETLEY [3722] on 23 Aug 1840 in South Ockenden Essex England. Hannah was born in Aveley Essex England, was baptised on 6 Jun 1819 in Aveley Essex England, and died on 22 May 1878 in Carlton Melbourne Colony of Victoria at age 58.

Children from this marriage were:

          i.  Emma SIBLEY [3723] was baptised on 18 Jun 1843 in South Ockenden Essex England and died on 7 Oct 1930 in Hawthorn Melbourne VIC Australia at age 87. Another name for Emma was Sivley & Davey.

21       ii.  Matilda SIBLEY [3685] (born on 30 Jan 1845 in Sth.Ockenden Greys Orsett Essex England - died on 1 Jan 1920 in Alfred St Fortitude Valley Q'land Australia)

iii.  John SIBLEY [20141] was born about 1847 in South Ockenden Essex England and was baptised on 30 Oct 1847 in South Ockenden Essex England. Another name for John was Davey.

43. Hannah KETLEY [3722], daughter of Samuel KETLEY [3727] and Elizabeth MOSS [3728], was born in Aveley Essex England, was baptised on 6 Jun 1819 in Aveley Essex England, and died on 22 May 1878 in Carlton Melbourne Colony of Victoria at age 58.

General Notes: SEARCH NOTES:

June 17, 1988. ... Details of the Christening of Hannah Ketley, were found in the I.G.I. at the Mormon Library, Greenwich. It appears Hannah was Christened at Braintree, in Essex. This was the only record of the Christening of a Hannah Ketley, although there were several Marriages recorded. None, however, appear to refer to the same Hannah. From the date of her Christening, it is possible and probable that this Hannah is Matilda Sivley's Mother.

As of January 2004, this has proved to be incorrect. Hannah was baptised at Aveley, not Braintree.

NEXT STEPS:
1. Await receipt of Marriage Certificate of Charles Howard and Matilda, ordered by Colin Ulph; and wait for New Edition of I.G.I. due at Greenwich in about 3-4 weeks.
This was not received, as the Charles Howard Spouse proved not to be Matilda Sivley.
2. Follow up any leads that develop from the above 3. Search Boyd's Marriage Index for Essex for any Sivley of Ketley Marriages. Boyd's Exist for most Parishes in Essex. H.U.SMITH, June 18, 1988.
4. Matilda's Birth Cert., rec'd., 27/9/88, show her Mother's Maiden Name as being Kirtley. However Hannah was obviously unable to write, or presumably spell, so this may be incorrect. Search Sth. Ockenden Census for 1841 for Sibleys, Sivleys, Ketleys or Kirtleys. H.U.SMITH. ... September 27, 1988. ...

In an email in January 2004, Laurette [Davey] MacWhirter advised that she had located a Baptism of Hannah Ketley, on June 6, 1819, at Aveley, Essex.

Laurette also advised that the 1861 Census for Romford [RG 9/1068 f. 111 p 18 Market Place] showed:-

Hannah Davey Head Widow 41 years
Matilda Davey Dau 16 years - Gl. Servant
John Davey Son 14 years - Ag. Labourer
William Son 2 years

It appears that at this time, the Family was going under the Name of Davey, Hannah's second Husband, John Davey having apparently died prior to the 1861 Census.

Noted events in her life were:

Emigration: 8 Feb 1864, Liverpool, on the "Tudor" to Melbourne, Colony of Victoria.

Hannah married George SIBLEY [3721] on 23 Aug 1840 in South Ockenden Essex England. George was born about 1811 and died on 26 Apr 1846 aged about 35.

          i.  James [William] DAVEY [21195] was born about 1859 and died on 28 Apr 1861 in Romford Essex England aged about 2.

Hannah next married William BRISCOE [21196] on 25 Feb 1867 in St John's Latrobe Street Melbourne Colony of Victoria.
