General Notes: In an e-Mail received from Yvonne [Todd] Lascelles in August 2018, she included a Newspaper Extract concerning the Funeral of James, as follows:
The funeral took place in City Cemetery yesterday afternoon of Private James Moorhead, 4th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. The late Soldier died at Brighton of wounds received at Neuve Chapelle, and the military funeral was unique in that it represented one of the first local interments of a Soldier who had succumbed to wounds received in action in the present campaign. The corpse, by permission of the War Office authorities, was brought home to his widowed Mother's residence, 18, Bright Street, from which address it was removed for interment. The funeral was accorded full military honours, and as the mournful procession, headed by the Band of the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, passed through the leading thoroughfares there were manifistations of profound regret.
The chief mourners were Sapper Andrew Moorhead, R.E. (brother); Private Andrew Moorhead, 16th Battalion R.I.R.; Mr. James Smith and Mr. Isaac Finlay (uncles); Private William Moorhead, R.A.M.C.; Private Andrew Moorhead and Private David Irvine, Y.C.V. (cousins); Private Richard Sterritt and Mr. Thomas Irvine -borthers-in-law).
Rev. Mr. Martin, assistant minister of Westbourne Presbyterian Church, conducted impressive services at the house and at the graveside.
Messrs. Melville & Co., Limited, had charge of the funeral arrangements.
