Vice Admiral Norman Atherton Wodehouse CB (18 May 1887 - 4 July 1941) was a Royal Navy officer killed in the second World War. He had gained 14 caps for England at rugby union, including six as captain between 1910 and 1913.

Wodehouse joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in the Atlantic Fleet in 1904.[1] During World War I , Wodehouse served in the battleship HMS Revenge at the Battle of Jutland , as a gunnery officer. Although several other members of his team were killed in the battle, Wodehouse survived, and went on to secure the position of aide-de-camp to King George VI and as a result was presented with the Companion of the Order of the Bath . Holt was sunk by U-69 on 4 July 1941, after he had ordered the South Africa bound convoy he was commanding to scatter due to the attacks by German submarines.

"I've just started putting together my family tree. I am the son of Beryl Collard daughter of Douglas Collard (b 1859) at Stodmarsh.
My family tree information differs from yours (which doesn't mean mine is correct!) My grandfather Douglas married a Gertrude Marion (B1870).
His brother Ernest (b 1856) married Caroline Argles (b 1860) in 1879 and had a son Douglas (b 1880) He Married Olga Powys-Lybbe. It looks as if your tree has shown Douglas (B1859) as the husband of Olga rather than uncle-in law. My grandfather was the farmer and his nephew (also Douglas) was the Timber merchant. I hope that fits in. If I have interpreted your tree incorrectly (not difficult as I'm easily confused - old timer's disease) perhaps you could correct me."

This then led to some proper information about the Collards.

In the 1901 census he was living with his parents at 78 Croyden Road, Beckenham, Kent and was an articled clerk, aged 21 and born in Thornton Heath, Surrey.

General Notes: Tim and Dulcie were Cousins

In an eMail, dated April 21, 2006, Bill Lonnen says:

I think it was Tim who lost a leg when his father swung into the drive of Swarling Manor and Tim was thrown from the horse drawn trap. Arthur was so drunk (as usual) that he hadn't noticed Tim had fallen from the trap. By the time Tim was discovered his leg was so badly injured it had to be amputated. A chap who worked for him told us that Tim made out that he'd lost the leg in the war!

Dulcie next married Charles HILL [83290] in Mar 1974 in Bridge Kent England. Charles died circa 2004.

Burghley made his Olympic debut in Paris in 1924, when he was eliminated in the first round of the 110 metre hurdles event. At the 1928 Summer Olympics, Burghley was eliminated in the semifinal of the 110 metre hurdles competition, but won the 400 metres hurdles, beating second and third placed Americans Frank Cuhel and Morgan Taylor by 0.2 seconds. At the first Commonwealth Games in 1930, Burghley won both hurdling events and was also a member of the gold medal winning British 4×440 yards relay team. In 1927\endash 1930 Burghley also set several British records, one of which, 24.7 s in the 220 yard hurdles, was set in 1927 and stood until 1950.[1]

In 1931 Burghley was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Peterborough. He was granted a leave of absence to compete in the 1932 Summer Olympics, where he placed fourth in the 400 m hurdles event, fifth in the 110 m hurdles competition, and won a silver medal as a member of the British 4 × 400 metres relay team, which set a new European record in the process.[1]

In 1933, Burghley became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Three years later he was elected President of the Amateur Athletic Association and Chairman of the British Olympic Association. In 1946 he became President of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and later acted as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 1948 Summer Olympics. Between 1952 and 1966 he was vice-president of the IOC and was a presidential candidate in 1952 and 1964.[1]

As an IOC member and president of the IAAF, Burghley presented the medals for the 200 m at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 and appeared in some famous images of the Black Power salute given by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.[5] When later asked what he had thought of the gloves, he said: "I thought they had hurt their hand."

Lord Montagu gained an interest in motoring from his father \emdash who had commissioned the original "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot for his Rolls-Royce \emdash and with his family collection of historic cars this led him to open the National Motor Museum in the grounds of his stately home, Beaulieu Palace House, Beaulieu, Hampshire, in 1952.[1]
