Independent (Footscray) - Saturday 8th August 1925

Very sincere and widespread regret was felt throughout the district on Thursday when it was known that Mr George Henry Fawcett had died shortly before midnight the previous day at his home in Wingfield Street.
Mr Fawcett, who was 77 years of age, contracted pleurisy three years ago, and never really got rid of its effects. He had been troubled by a cough ever since, and during the recent cold weather bronchitis supervened and was the immediate cause of death.
Born in London in 1848, he came to Australia when 5 years age and spent the last 25 years in Footscray, where he carried on business as a boat builder near the Hopetown Bridge.
For a great many years he was president of the Footscray City Rowing Club and a vice-president of the Footscray Swimming Club. He was also well-known in friendly society circles, holding the office of District Supervisor of the G.U.O.O.F.
The deceased leaves a widow, two daughters, Mrs Fossey and Mrs Sparks, both of whom live in Sydney, and four sons, George, Charles, Joseph and William. All are very well known in Footscray.
Mr J Fawcett is the popular treasurer of the Footscray Football Club, and Mr W Fawcett, who is at present in England, is very well-known in football, rowing and swimming circles.
The many friends of the family were deeply grieved to learn of their loss, and many expressions of sympathy have been extended to them.
The funeral took place at the Footscray Cemetery on Friday, and there was a large and representative gathering at the graveside. The Rev. J H Frewin officiated, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Walter A Wearne.

Footscray - The Mail - Saturday January 28th 1939

An old and respected resident in the person of Mrs Annie Harriet Fawcett passed away at her residence, 39 Lynch Street, Footscray, on Monday.

Mrs Fawcett, who was 85 years of age, had gone out to post a letter to her daughter, and had a seizure in the street. She was able to return home and taking to her bed died peacefully less than 20 minutes afterwards.

The late Mrs Fawcett came to Australia with her parents from Surrey, England, 82 years ago, and lived at Geelong where her father (the late William Stinton) established himself as one of the first nurserymen in Australia.

It was in 1901 that Mrs Fawcett came to Footscray, living first in Wingfield Street, and later in Lynch Street. She was a home loving woman and her only social activity was as a member of the Ladies Guild, at St Johns Church, Pickett Street. Here great hobby was gardening.

Mrs Fawcett was married 62 years ago at St Lukes Church, South Melbourne, and was the mother of two girls and four sons. They are Stella (Mrs A. Allen, of Sydney, well known as a radio artist), George (an active member of the Oddfellows Lodge and the Rowing Club), Charlie (a member of the local Post Office staff), Joe, (secretary in the Public Health Department Canberra, and a former treasurer of the Footscray Football Club), Bill (Secretary of the V.A.S.A. and former vice president of the F.F.C.) and Adela (Mrs A. Charlie Fawcett

It is with regret that I record the following particulars of Fellow "Charlie" Robert Charles Alfred Fawcett, who died on Sunday 10th July aged 75 years. He was born at Albert Park where his father had a boat building establishment at the Albert Park Lake. His father later removed this business to the Maribyrnong River at Wingfield Street near Hopetown Bridge, Footscray. Charlie was a great oarsman in his young days and was cox of the first Footscray City rowing crew, a maiden eight coached by his father. He also rowed in the first Henley on the Yarris with his brother (George) also in the crew and his brother (Joe) as cox. They were only beaten by about one foot. With the late Roy Bohun he founded the Footscray Stamp Society and was president of the Commonwealth Special Stamp Society. He had received official recognition among philatelists for his work in their field. His collection of stamps was one of the most valuable in Australia. He was employed almost all of his life in the Postal Department, starting as a telegraph messenger boy in the city and had served for 47 years when he retired at the age of 60, 40 of which were in Footscray. He was married at St John's Church of England in Footscray to Florence Emerson on May 11th 1910, and went to live at 30 Lynch Street, Footscray where he continued for the rest of his life. He and Mrs Fawcett celebrated their Golden wedding last May. Left to mourn are the widow, three sons and a daughter, Jess (Mrs H Miller), Harold, Alfred and Lindsey, and eight grandchildren.
Charlie was a member of many cultural and literary societies among which were the Bread and Cheese Club, The Henry Lawson Memorial and Literary Society, and the Australian Poetry Lovers' Society. Membership in these went back many years and he was Vice-President of the Lawson Society when its President died in 1952. He was elected President and was in office at his death. He was an accomplished writer of children's nursery rhymes and at composing acrostics in which field he had an great ability. At more serious writing his work is well illustrated in a splendidly produced book entitled "The Melody of the Garden" to which Dame Mary Gilmore wrote an appreciative forward. He had at least two books of children's verse published, one being illustrated by "Armstrong". All his literary work was done under the name of "Harold Charles. His work for the Lawson Society was a labour of love with him, and when the Lawson Memorial Committee was set up with him as chairman and myself as secretary, no-one was more enthusiastic than he was, and no-one more pleased than I am now that he lived to see that Memorial erected in the Footscray Park, and be the chairman for the unveiling ceremony on February 7th 1960. All the way through the period of organising that memorial, he stood behind it as an under-writer against loss, and his entertaining the guests and representatives of kindred societies after the unveiling was a spontaneous gesture that typified his generous nature. He used his influence at all times to smooth over any difficulties that arose in matters of policy among members.
There was always something wrong if Charlie did not attend any meeting of the Societies, and when he was absent from the July meeting of the Bread and Cheese Club many of us felt that something was amiss. There was! He was in bed with a chill. Pneumonia set in and his heart did not stand the strain. He was cremated on Tuesday July 12th. Cyril Coode and myself represented the societies of which he was a member, by assisting as coffin bearers. There was a large and representative attendance of other members, back at the house and at the crematorium.
And so another of the "old brigade" passes on! The ranks are beginning to get thin. But the work of such as Charlie" is not lost. He wrote a poem on "The Lawson Tree" in Footscray Park, the last verse being-
"The pioneers who first came here and read our Lawson 'neath this Tree
Have passed beyond, so stand and bow your head in memory."
Charlie Fawcett has now joined that band of pioneers and we bow our head to his memory
