(From G.T Ridlon's book) Walter acquired the Barony of Minto, Roxburghshire, although it was apparently sold 7 June 1683 to his son-in-law Thomas Rutherford (a brother of John Rutherford of Edgerston), from whom it passed the following year (22/07/1684) into another's ownership.
His children disputed the right of their father to sell and eventually, on it being sold to Earl Ferras in 1687, the four surviving daughters agreed to its conveyance. See P132 'The Scottish Nation' Vol II by William Anderson published 1867. The buyer (in the late 1600s), was Gilbert Elliot born 1651 and eminent judge.

John, Walter's eldest son, succeeded his father as third Baronet. He is called in the family Sir John Bluebeard, because he had four wives, not of course at once, like Brigham Young. His wives were-1st, Miss Scott of Harden; 2d, Miss Morrison, Prestongrange; 3d, Miss Swinton, Swinton; and fourth, Mrs Watt, formerly Miss Hepburn, married first to Mr Watt of Rosehill, and after his decease, to Sir John Riddell. Sir John, inheriting his mother's religious zeal, became a zealous Covenanter, and suffered imprisonment for his defence of civil and religious liberty, and his nonconformity. He sat in several parliaments for the county of Roxburgh. He got a remission from the king in 1687, and he died in 1700, a very short time after his fourth marriage.

A strenuous covenanter who was 'pressured' to go to America 1685. A Reverend of the reformed church of Edinburgh who spent 2 years incarcerated in France. In May 1694 he was the minister at Weemes.
The Reverend Archibald Riddell, the third son of the second Baronet, was a minister of the reformed church in Edinburgh who was persecuted and imprisoned because he would not renounce his Covenanter beliefs; unlike many others, however, he escaped with his life.
According to John Oliphant, who writes
" I John OLIPHANT ane of his Maties gaurd of hors be thir pnts grant me to have receaved from Mr John vans goodman of ye Tolbooth of Edr the persone of Mr Archibald RIDDELL minister for to be transported from ye sd Tolbooth of Edr to ye Bass and that conforme to ane order of General Dalziell for that effect daited ye 8 of July 1681 Sic Sub Jo: Oliphant
Riddell was warded on June 9th ' by oreder off ye lords of his Maties secreit counsell.' " (See Scott's Fasti.)
According to his daughter Sarah' s marriage details (see Sarah's marriage notes), he was the minister at Kirkaldy in 1703.
