Im afraid I'm writing with very sad news about Joan.
She passed away on 27th December at about 3pm. As dad told you I think, she had been ill and in hospital for about 3 weeks. She had a chest infection and then a partial kidney failure and presumably some sort of heart failure at the end. She was in a little discomfort with various tubes, but at the end it was much more peaceful and she was very calm. Sonie and Ernest were with her when she died.
In another e-Mail from Ernest Rodker to Paul Morrison in September 2011, he included:
As my mother requested in her will, we have now donated the pictures of John by David Bomberg and Sonia, his wife, by Isaac Rosenberg to the Ben Uri Jewish collection. They were very pleased to receive the pictures; we were very sad to let them go! I wonder what you thought of the copy of John's picture?
And for the questions: my mother was in St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, when she died. ( She had been there for just three weeks. Unfortunately, hospitals are not nice places to die in and I do regret those last weeks). She was not buried but cremated and we have still to finally decide what to do with the ashes. We have had a bench made with an inscription to her life and achievements, which is now in place in Holland Park, Kensington, where she often used to walk. On October 2nd we intend to have a small gathering of friends and family, at the bench, to welcome it to the park, and to, perhaps, surreptitiously spread the ashes. We shall see.
