Rugby player, businessman and cheesemaker

PETER Kininmonth deserves to be remembered for far more than his legendary dropped goal for Scotland against Wales at Murrayfield in 1951.
The Cheshire-born son of expatriate Scottish parents, he was a soldier, a sportsman, businessman, gardener and philanthropist before, aged 75 and in retirement, he took up cheese making and became a winner in that field too.
At school in Sedbergh, Cumbria, he fared better as a cricketer than a rugby player and he was good enough to play for those great amateur touring clubs Free Foresters and I'Zingari.
He saw war service in India and Italy with the Third Ghurkhas, where he attained the rank of captain and on demobilisation he went up to Brasenose College, Oxford, to read history. His mother, one of the first female graduates of Liverpool University, had refused to leave the college until her son, then serving overseas, was guaranteed a place.
At Oxford his rugby career blossomed, he was a double blue, in 1947 and 1948, and was still at university when he won the first of his 21 Scotland caps, eight of them as captain, in 1948.
On graduating, he went into the City of London, where his first job didn't even cover the cost of his railway season ticket. He persevered at Lloyds, his enthusiasm, optimism, charm and determination eventually bearing fruit when he came to head his own independent brokerage. He had formed the brokerage in 1970, before amalgamating with the larger Lowndes Lambert company, from which he retired as deputy chairman.
He was appointed to the ceremonial but still prestigious office of High Sheriff of Greater London in 1979-80.
While at Lloyds he chaired that body's Olympic Appeal in 1992, and in the process raised a record amount of cash towards the cost of sending the British team to that year's Olympic Games in Barcelona.
He was also chairman of Lloyds' Rugby Club, while his other sporting interests were squash and golf.
He chaired the Lloyds Golfing Society and was a member of several golf clubs in the UK and in the United States.
After leaving university Kininmonth continued his rugby career, rejecting the more obvious move from Oxford to London Scottish, and instead joining their "landlords" at Richmond Athletic Ground, Richmond FC - because, he said "they were not as good a team as Scottish at the time and I thought I had more chance of a regular game".
He was to give a lifetime of service to Richmond, eventually becoming a trustee of the Richmond Foundation, one of the UK's leading providers of mental health care; he was also a trustee of Glyndebourne Festival Opera and a well-known plantsman and gardener.
Retirement took Kininmonth and his wife, Priscilla, to the village of Ashmore on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. It was here, in 2001 that he decided to use the milk from his herd of pedigree Holstein-Fresians at Manor House Farm to make cheese.
This meant going back to college, but so successful was his foray into cheese-making that in 2006 Cranborne Chase Cheeses, the company he formed, won the Cheese Lovers Trophy at the Cheltenham Cheese Fair, and his Alderwood cheese, one of the three types he made, found its way on to the cheese board in the Houses of Parliament.
Aside from his Scotland caps, Kininmonth was a member of the 1950 British Lions touring party to New Zealand, the first such party to wear the famed red jersey, playing in three tests.
The Lions backs, guided by Irish stand off Jackie Kyle and Welsh centres Jack Matthews and Bleddyn Williams were a different class, but the British pack was physically ill-equipped to compete with the All Blacks, although Kininmonth and Welsh lock Roy John were singled out as being worthy opponents by the New Zealanders.
The tour may not have been successful, but on the ship coming home, Kininmonth met and fell in love with his future wife, whom he married in 1951.
His Scotland career, forever identified with his glorious dropped goal from half-way in the 19-0 defeat of a star-studded Welsh side in 1951, covered a low period for the nation. He played in the 44-0 Murrayfield hammering from the 1952 Springboks, but Kininmonth was one-third of one of the great Scottish loose forward trios, with Douglas Elliot and the Australian-Scot Douglas Kelleher.
Before his death at home, he was preparing to join a party of former British Lions, led by Sir Tony O'Reilly, on a trip to France to take in the closing stages of the Rugby World Cup.
