Mary Simmonds' birth was never registered. In order to get a passport, she had to get a statutory declaration. In her youth, she spent a great deal of time yachting with her father or brothers, but was a lonely, fearful adolescent. A very talented, artistic person, she was kind and well-intentioned, but she found life very difficult. A keen gardener and an excellent cook, she was a skilled home maker. She suffered a stroke aged 74, and gradually needed more care from then on. The stroke affected her co-ordination, so she was unable to paint, knit or play the piano, pastimes that she had greatly enjoyed. She relied greatly on her husband for support and, once he had died, her life became a struggle to maintain her independence and control over decisions that affected her. She had senile dementia and lived in old aged homes for the last years of her life.
