31. William STANGER [85233] (John19, John6, James2, John1) was born about 1821 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, was baptised on 11 Mar 1821 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, and died on 16 Mar 1888 aged about 67.

General Notes: In his Biographical Summary, Keith Martin states:
William. In the 1841 Census, aged 20 unmarried, lived in Castor (no address), listed first in household with three siblings and two lodgers. Shoemaker. (1841 Census: HO 107/815, p9)
In 1843, his marriage record describes him as "cordwainer" (CPRT, no. 53. (SL)
In1851, aged 30, married with 3 children, living in Castor (no address) in his father-in-law's house. Master shoemaker. (1851 Census: HO 107/1747; 605; p.12)
Widowed in 1857.
In 1861, aged 40, in Peterborough Gaol. Trade given as cordwainer. (1861 Census: RG 9.966; Parish of St John the Baptist, Peterboro', schedule 24, p.8 - the Gaol) . Details still being sought as to reason for imprisonment.
In 1871, aged 50, living at the home of Harriet MOORE (aged 45, a widow) and her children at 17 Hall Lane, Werrington. Widower, shoemaker. Daughter Sarah, aged 15, living with him. (1871 Census: RG 10 1519, p.14) ..Harriet's youngest child, Bertha aged 2 in 1871, was conceived with William Stanger (Mrs Speller of Thames Ditton (via KS), granddaughter of Bertha. Bertha's birth certificate gave 'father unknown'. When she married in Sept 1892 that certificate gave father as 'William Stanger Moore, deceased shoemaker'.
By the 1881 Census, aged 60, William, shoemaker, was living alone at 39 Westgate Street, Peterborough. (By then, Harriet Moore was living at 42 Westgate Street) (1881 Census: FHL Film 1341382. Ref RG11, Piece 1596, Folio 34, p. 19)
He died 16 March 1888, aged 68, at 11 Westwood Street, P'boro', from abdominal cancer (Certified Copy of Entry of Death, GRO)

William married Sarah DICKENS [85239] [MRIN: 28260], daughter of John DICKENS [85269] and Ann [85270], in 1843. Sarah was born about 1825 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, was baptised on 25 Sep 1825 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, and died on 10 Apr 1857 aged about 32.

General Notes: In his Biographical Summary, Keith Martin states:
Sarah was born in Castor, the daughter of John and Ann DICKENS.
She was married in 1843, aged 19. Marriage record describes her as "servant" (CPRT, no. 53. SL)
In 1851, aged 27, married with three children, she was living in her father's house in Castor (no address) (1851 Census: HO 107/1747; 605; p.12)
She died in April 1857, aged 33, from phthisis [any wasting illness of the body, especially pulmonary TB] (Certified Copy of Entry of Death, GRO) .

   48 F    v. Sarah STANGER [85244] was born in 1856.

Sarah married Frederick John BROTHERTON [85245] [MRIN: 28261] on 28 Jul 1878 in Hackney Middlesex England.

William next married Harriet MOORE [85267] [MRIN: 28267]. Marriage status: de facto.

   49 F    i. Bertha STANGER [85268] was born about 1869 in Werrington Cambridgeshire England.

35. Lydia STANGER [85237] (John19, John6, James2, John1) was born about 1828 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised in 1828 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: In Keith Martin's Biographical Notes, he states:
Lydia was living with her siblings, not in their parents' home, in 1841, aged 13 (1841 Census) .
In 1851, aged 24, she was living as a housemaid (along with a governess, lady's maid, footman, nurse and cook) in the Burley household in Ramsgate, Kent.
She was married in February 1854 at St Georges, Hanover Square, London, giving her address as Upper Ebury Street (perhaps the London home of the Burleys?). Her groom was James LITTLE, a cabinet maker living in Paddington. Census returns give his birthplace as ?Arthurst, ?Arthuret, Cumberland (about nine miles north of Carlisle, on the banks of the Esk) and his birthdate as 1824-25. [Probably Arthuret, Cumberland - Howard Smith]
By 1861, having had one child born in Marylebone, London, James and Lydia had moved to Kirklinton (about 8 miles north of Carlisle), to his father's home. David LITTLE, aged 76, was described as 'farmer of 5½ acres'. His wife, Elizabeth, was 71. James and Lydia had three children, Mary Ann, 5, Sarah, 3, and Jane, 1.
In 1871, Lydia and James were living with three children Jane, 11, James, 8, and Elizabeth Lydia, 6 (no mention of Mary Ann or Sarah). They were living in the house of James' widowed mother, aged 83, described as 'farmer of 6 acres'.
10 years later, they had moved to another house within the area with Elizabeth Lydia still at home. James was described as 'retired carpenter' aged only 56!
In 1891, James and Lydia had Jane and Elizabeth Lydia at home, still single.
In 1901, Lydia was a widow and had moved house again. With her on Census night were unmarried daughters Mary Ann (45, born Marylebone) and Elizabeth Lydia (34) .

Lydia married James LITTLE [85238] [MRIN: 28259], son of David LITTLE [85271] and Elizabeth [85272], on 5 Feb 1854 in Hanover Square London England. James was born about 1824 in Arthuret [Parish] Cumberland England and died before 1901 in Arthuret [Parish] Cumberland England.

Children from this marriage were:

   50 F    i. Mary Ann LITTLE [85273] was born about 1855.

   51 F    ii. Sarah LITTLE [85274] was born about 1857.

   52 F    iii. Jane LITTLE [85275] was born about 1859.

   53 M    iv. James LITTLE [85276] was born about 1862.

   54 F    v. Elizabeth Lydia LITTLE [85277] was born about 1864.

38. William Lichfield STANGER [85260] (James Nichols30, Francis14, James2, John1) was born about 1849 and was baptised on 30 Dec 1849.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
William Lichfield. In 1861, aged 12, described in the Census as 'scholar'.
In 1871, aged 21 and living still with in his parents' home, his trade was given as 'shoemaker'.
In 1881, he was still living with his parents in Castor, following the trade of shoemaker.
In 1891, he was living in Cobden Street, Peterborough. His occupation was given as 'Railway Guard'. He was married to Jane and had a daughter, Florence, 14, a milliner's apprentice and a son, William H, 9, a scholar. Both children were born in Peterborough. Jane was three years William's senior and was born in Deeping, a town about seven miles north of Peterborough.
In 1901, the family were still living at the same address. Florence was a shop assistant. Her brother had dropped the name 'William' in favour of 'Harrold'

William married Jane [85278] [MRIN: 28270] before 1876. Jane was born about 1846 in Deeping Lincolnshire England.

Children from this marriage were:

   55 F    i. Florence STANGER [85279] was born about 1877.

   56 M    ii. William H STANGER [85280] was born about 1882. Another name for William was Harold STANGER.
