The marriage of Mr, B. Claydon, of the Education Department, Southern Nigeria (second son of Captain B.R. Claydon, of Deeping St James), and Miss Kitty Stanger (youngest daughter of the late Mr. J. and Mrs. Stanger, of Market Deeping), was celebrated at St Gutlac's Chruch by the Rev. W.W. Howard, Dean of Stamford. The bride was given away by her mother, and Mr Humphrey silver, of Stone Cross, Ashurst, Kent, was best man.
The bride was dressed in a cream embroidered cashmere robe, trimmed with Maltese lace (the gift of the bridegroom's mother), with a cream picture hat, trimmed with chiffon and marabout feathers (the gift of the bridegroom). There is no sign of a Batthershell/Claydon birth thereafter and they then appear to have divorced in the mid-1960s. After the divorce Marianne does not remarry and her death is registered in Surrey in October 1985. It would seem very likely indeed that she had no child by John Batthershell, who appears to be living with his second wife (Linda N Battershell nee Hutcherson) in a 2013 address in Teignmouth.

At the age of 5 Annie went to live with her Welsh grandparents on medical advice but she remained there all of her life and became 'more Welsh than English'. Later they lived at Rhos Farm*, Llanferris, on the Ruthin to Mold road. This is where Annie's brothers Arthur and Wilfred and Billy Kidd spent working holidays getting in the hay.

Annie suffered greatly from malnutrition as a small child and she was sent to_Wales on medical advice. WILLIAM POLLARD DIGBY was well known as a consulting engineer, specializing in hydro-electric schemes and electrical plant. He received his technical education at the Crystal Palace School of engineering and served his apprenticeship at the Newton Electrical Works, Taunton. In 1896 he went to New York to study the Woolf electrolytic process and in the same year he was appointed works superintendent to the British Electrozone Corporation with responsibility for the erection of the factory at Seaham Harbour. In the following year he worked under Professor Kanthack and Dr. S. Rideal on the sterilization of sewage effluents. From 1898 until 1901 he carried out experimental research in connection with the electrolytic production of sodium hypochlorite on an economic basis. During the next two years he was placed in charge of the test bed and later, of the
drawing office, of the Buck Henrici Engineering Company of Berlin.
On his return to England in 1903 he was engaged on inspection and research work and at the same time acted as lecturer at the Crystal Palace School of Engineering until 1910. Two years later he began to practice as a consulting engineer and went into partnership with the late Mr. A. C. Heap, M.I.Mech.E. He was responsible either singly or jointly, for the inauguration of many important schemes and was personally responsible for the inspection and testing of hydro-electric plant. During the laying of the huge pipe lines of the Tummel Bridge hydroelectric power scheme he acted, jointly with Lt.-Commr. R. B. Fairthorne, R.N. (ret.), A.M.I.Mech.E., as resident engineer for Messrs. Balfour, Beatty and Company.
Early in the war of 1914-18 he volunteered for service in France, but not being accepted, he served in the Territorial Force of the Royal Engineers and from 1916 to 1920 was attached to the Ministry of Munitions. Mr. Digby, whose death occurred at Bournemouth on 5th July 1943 in his sixty-eighth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901 and was transferred to Membership in 1916. He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. His inventions covered a very wide range and included the "Vibragraph" vibration measurer; the "Ulvanic" method of paint testing;
a reflection meter; and (jointly with Mr. C. W. V. Biggs) the "Dionic" water tester. Latterly, his research in the field of chrome-copper stainless steels attracted considerable attention both here and in America.
In a fevered age, Mr. Digby never overlooked the simple courtesies, and he detested any form of cheap showmanship.

Adrian Digby joined the department in 1932 and, in an unpublished memoir written after he retired, vividly documented the evacuation of the ethnography collection to Drayton House in Northamptonshire during the war years. Adrian Digby became keeper in 1953. He was chiefly interested in the Maya, although he had responsibility for the archaeology and ethnography of the whole of the Americas.

He excavated the site of Las Cuevas in Honduras in 1957.

Re the British Museum Crystal Skull "No British Museum official has suggested publicly that the skull is not ancient or that it is anything other than Aztec. However, in the soon-to-be-discussed British Museum crystal skull file, there is a letter from Adrian Digby to Dr. A.E. Werner of the Research Laboratory in which Digby makes a very intriguing assertion that varies greatly from the British Museum's public stance and raises additional questions. Digby wrote (italics added), "Our specimen is clearly not of Aztec origin, though it may well have been a cult object of some esoteric sect or it may be Masonic." While the British Museum public stance may be that it is probably Aztec, it is clear from this statement by Adrian Digby, a man concerned with the skull throughout his life, that he considered its origin to be
unknown - clearly not Aztec. "

General Notes: When Margaret was eight years old, and shortly after the birth of her Brother Eric, her Mother died, supposedly of Scarlet Fever. Margaret later established it was probably Puerperal Fever after childbirth. During Edith's (Mother) illness, Margaret and Harold were cared for by their Ward Grandparents in Sheffield and "Jack" (Arthur John) went to the Smith Grandparents at March. Following Edith's Death their Aunt Janet cared for the Children and their Father for a time. However, their Father left within a short time allowing the Children to be cared for by members of their Parents Families. Margaret was "adopted" by her Uncle Tom and Aunt "Nellie" (Eleanor), who was her Mother's Sister. Harold was cared for by the Smith Grandparents in March; and went to a Boarding School at Snettisham in Norfolk. Arthur (Jack) was cared for by the Ward Grandparents and his Uncle Arthur, who was "like a Father to him". The "Baby", Eric was adopted by a Minister of Religion on the understanding that no contact was made with him by other members of the Family. During their childhood Margaret and Jack were very close and spent considerable time at the Chesterman Family Home, "Eastwood Grange" at Ashover in Derbyshire. Margaret and Jack generally lost track of Harold. Margaret saw him when she was 18, and living at Wimbledon. He was at that time staying with his Father, although the other Children did not make contact with their Father at that time. Shortly after this, when he was 17 years old Jack left England
for Australia. Margaret saw him when he returned to England with the Australian Imperial Forces during the 1914-1918 War. Following that he returned to Australia; and they never saw each other again. Following the 1914-1918 War, all contact with Harold was lost. Margaret saw her Father again about 1926; but only from a distance. She never made contact with him again. Following that he worked as a Junior Clerk at Hadfields Steel Foundry in Sheffield during the latter half of 1911. Following that it is believed he was employed as an Apprentice Fitter (possibly for the same Company) until 1914. When he was just over 17 years old, on March 19, 1914, he left England for Australia on the P.& O. 11,000 ton T.S.S.BELTANA. On arrival in Australia he apparently made his way to the Northern Rivers of N.S.W. where he worked for a time "on the Roads". He subsequently trained as and was employed as a Herd-tester, testing Dairy Herds for Milk and Cream quality. On August 20, 1915 he enlisted from Brisbane in the 47th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces AIF A photograph of Jack taken sometime during WWI states he was in the 13/15th Rifles. Who or what that Battalion was is at present unknown. Following Service in Egypt and France, he was discharged, as a Corporal, Medically unfit, as a result of "Trench Feet" acquired in the Trenches of France. On his return to Australia, he was given a Government Land Grant, which proved to be an un-workable swamp. He abandoned this; and was employed for a time in various Government Driving jobs in Brisbane. He was subsequently employed as a Sales Representative in the Printing Industry. During the course of his employment with the Howard Printing Works, at Graham St., South Brisbane he married "the Daughter of the Boss", Lucy Howard. He later worked for Simpson Halligan & Co., in the same capacity, where he was employed for a total of about 21 years. From late 1946 he was the Proprietor of both a Boarding House, and a General Store at Southport, South of Brisbane. Neither of these were exceptionally successful and he returned to Brisbane again as a Printer's Rep- resentative with Watson Ferguson. In 1949 he again left Brisbane, purchasing a Pineapple Farm at Montville, on the Ranges to the North of Brisbane. After about 8 years he returned to Brisbane to again work for Simpson Halligan as a Printer's Rep During this time, as a result of being a constant heavy Smoker, aggravated (probably) by the use of Pesticides and Weedicides on the Farm he was constantly ill, suffering from a form of Anaemia and Emphysema. When they were married, Jack and "Luce" made their (New) Home at Sandgate Road, Nundah, at the top of "Buck's Hill". They lived here until they bought the Boarding House, "Rowallen", The Esplanade, Southport. From there they purchased the "Tropical Cafe", Brighton Parade, Southport. From Southport they returned to Brisbane to live at Oxlade Drive, New Farm. They then moved to the "Farm" at Flaxton Road, Montville. Following their final return to Brisbane they lived firstly at 46 Speight Street, Brighton; and finally at 52 Lovegrove Street, Zillmere. ... "Jack" was always a genuine "Gentleman". He was completely honest and above-board; and always had the respect of his associates. He was always willing to carry a part of the load of whatever Social Activity in which he was involved. He was firstly Secretary of his Football Club, "Brisbane City" about the mid 20's. He was subsequently Secretary of Robert McGavin Masonic Lodge, Vulture St., South Brisbane, of which he was a member for many years also serving as Worpshipful Master. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge (Masonic) of Queensland where he served as Sword Bearer. As a result of changing fortune (the financial difficulty of running a Pineapple Farm) he retired from his association with the Masonic lodge, although he was well enough thought of for the Members to offer to defer his fees. During the 1939-45 War he tried to enlist; but was rejected due to his age and prior disability. However, he did serve with the Auxilliary Fire Service, mostly practising hosing "the bush" around Nundah; and "pumping out" the odd Air Raid Shelter. During his time as a Pineapple Farmer he was active with the Montville Pineapple Farmers Association; and the Committee of Direction of Fruit Marketing. As well as being the "Gentleman" mentioned above, he was kind and tolerant and a loving Father and Grand-father. ...

I wish I knew where Harold is - does anybody know? It seems so sad to have lost sight of him so completely. I don't even know if he came through the War all right. Did you see him at all during the War? Poor Harold, he had a rather bad Legacy of nerves. His health much improved in March [The Township or Village] with the open air live. Alas! he lacked strength of will & I always think that was due to Minnie's drastic treatment at Beeston. As soon as I went for a short time to keep house there, I got rid of her - her influence was not good.
You were then such a jolly little boy. I was loth to part with you when Sheffield [the Chesterman Family?] claimed you; but it had to be & you had more opportunities than ever March would have furnished."

She lived in Plettenburg Bay, Cape Province, Republic of South Africa in Nov 1973. She is reference number 1596. In some records her maidename is given as Godwin as well as Raffles. I will wait and see if I get proof of which is in fact correct.

In the family she was known as Aunt Equie or Aunt Leeka - she answered to both! These names were taken from her strange middle names which arose from the fact she was born aboard a ship the 'Galeka' at the Equator on her family's emigration to South Africa. Aunt Equie always said it sailed under the Greek flag.
24 August 2004 an e-mail received from Nigel Killeen advised me that according to a booklet in his possession that the 'Galeka' was in fact built in Belfast. She was the sister ship to the 'Gaika' on which one of his relations sailed.

At the time of my grandmother Chloris Ilva Hope Lockington Tainton Browne's death in November 1973 Equie was living in Plettenberg Bay.
Her letter of condolence to the family at the time of Clo's Death reads:
Dear Q, Jess, Sheila and Bob,
You can imagine how sad we were at the news of our beloved Clo's passing on. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you children, you will all miss her. She was a very wonderful person, and to me personally was quite one of the kindest souls I have ever met. From the age of eighteen she was a shining light in my life and never did she ever fail me. I was kindly blessed with a sister-in-law so kind and so outstandingly helpful. Bless her dear heart - may she rest in the peace and happiness she deserves.
