General Notes: In a Stanger Family File from Mark Ward in April 2008, Mark included:-
Thomas was the eldest of William's eight children, was brought up on his father's farm at Moulton. He was a General Baptist, who began preaching publicly in 1748 - his son John later described him as "warm and Ernest in his preaching although a plain unlettered preacher. Within the Baptist Church this time there was a move away from the beliefs of the General Baptists towards the Calvinism of the Particular Baptists - move which was to be reflected in John's own career as a pastor, and this is perhaps the reason why John would later speak of his father's stiffness and tenacity in maintaining his sentiments on every religious subject, contrary to that fair investigation and candid enquiry, which would have rendered him much more respectable in the view ofthose from whom he differed -a characteristic which John termed "one of the most prominent foibles in his religious character".
Chiefly by Thomas's efforts a Meeting House was built at Mounton in 1750 ( to be rebuilt in 1787), of which Thomas was later ordained pastor.
In his will Thomas is described as a yeoman. he farmed at Moulton, at first with his father, for over thirty years and then for the last ten years of his life at Holcott, two miles away. Moulton farm was 140 acres at a rent of £40 per annum.
