"Napier's inner harbour mystery, which had its beginnings in the opening months of this century, is an unresolved tragedy, marked only by a lost and forgotten grave in Napier cemetery.
The authorities were first alerted to what was thought to be a homicide, on Sunday afternoon, June 3 1900.
Andrew Martin, a fisherman from Western Spit (now Westshore), was sailing across the inner harbour, heading home from Kopaki. He noticed something unusual floating near Long Point, at the end of the convoluted sandbar known as the Serpentine. Taking a closer look he realised it was the body of a naked and mutilated woman. The severe neck wounds made him think she'd been murdered so he hauled the corpse into his boat, notifying the local constable when he reached the shore...........Dr Jarvis estimated the woman was between 20 and 30 and about six months pregnant. He thought she'd been in thewater for three or four weeks, and concluded that the cause of death was drowning. The extensive injuries having been caused by fish............."

Andrew married Jane Elizabeth SIMS [27860] [MRIN: 2625], daughter of James SIMS [27902] and Emma [27903], 28 Aug 1893 in Napier Hawkes Bay New Zealand. Jane was born about 1874 in Newington Surrey England and died 19 Nov 1949 in Napier Hawkes Bay New Zealand about age 75.
