General Notes: Chloris Mary Peck says, a note in my grandmother's handwriting in my possession says:-
"My father, Allen, was one of Richard George Tainton's children. He, Richard, was a Special Magistrate of British Kaffraria. This was a military centre. Grannie (my mother) often told us of the English Soldiers in their red coats, white helmets and imported horses. Speaking of horses during the rinderpest outbreak my father Allen was in charge of the Kuruman area of the Orange Free State during the outbreak; rinderpest was a dreadful scourge (like foot and mouth, only worse). The government sent for horses to Argentina and a cousin of my father, Tainton Wooldridge who was a Captain was given the boat 'The Britain' and he had a cargo of horses which had taken weeks to travel from South America. When they landed at East London the town was infested with flies. They had been breeding on board for weeks. He said he no sooner....
(second page missing).
According to my grandmother her father was known in the family as 'Allen'; the spelling I have used in the file is that shown as being taken from his parents bible, which should be an accurate source.
Like his father he was an Inspector of police. He was in the Cape Mounted Police.
He died a few weeks before the birth of his youngest child, Allen.
Clo never talked about either Thelma or Avril.
Allen was interested in Greek Mythology which is why he called my grandmother Chloride. Chloride was a Greek Nymph. Botticelli's painting is a representation of Chloride with Zephyr on the right of the picture.. Chloride is then changed into the Goddess Flora in her wedding gown featured in the centre of the painting.
Noted events in his life were:
• Occupation: Inspector, Cape Mounted Police.
Richard married Amy May Rachel LLOYD [42997], daughter of John LLOYD [43161] and Mary Ann PIRIE [43162], in Cape Colony South Africa. Amy was born on 22 Mar 1867 in Grahamstown Eastern Cape South Africa and died on 1 Jul 1964 in Marievale Transvaal South Africa at age 97.
General Notes: Amy Mary Rachel Lloyd was a very strong, determined woman of small stature. She was still riding horses side-saddle well into her 70's.
She was treated to a helicopter flight for her 90th birthday.
She was very active until she was about 92 when she fractured her hip. This slowed her down and she became house-bound.
Before the death of her second husband John Elias Lewis she was still walking to the shops (about 4 mile round trip).
In a corner of her sitting room at her flat in Springs she kept one of the assegai's said to have been used in the murder of her Father-in-Law, Richard George Tainton and great uncle John James Henry Tainton.
For some reason the family disapproved of her having married John Elias Lewis who had been her husband's Sergeant in the Cape Mounted Police. It is understandable that in her circumstances (having numerous children, one a baby) soon after the death of her husband she needed the protection of a man.)
The family always addressed him as 'Mr. Lewis' and talked of him in the same vein.
Amy and John had two children of their own, Thelia Mary 'Dolly' Lewis who married Andrew McCullogh, and Reece William Lewis who married Zoe and had Dawn Lewis in about 1940 and Patrick (Paddy) Lewis born in about 1948.
Amy Mary Rachel was a descendant of two 1820 Settler families, the Lloyd's and Piries.
Amy Mary Rachel Lloyd was the youngest of 10 children. Her siblings were James William, Charles, William, John Andrew, Elizabeth, Edward Richard, Herbert Holliday, Robert and Oliver Ishmael Lloyd.
Her brother closest in age to her, Oliver Ishmael Lloyd and his wife Catherine 'Kate' Cory were two of the sponsors at the baptism of Chloris Ilva Hope Lockington Tainton. The other sponsor was a cousin, Bertha Lloyd.

General Notes: Notes from Tessa Smith:
Hilda inherited half of 'Haddon Hall'. She left half to her son Coventry and the other half to Victor.
From Mary Jane Dell's will Hilda not only inherited Haddon Hall but the furniture and household effects together with the traps and horses. She was also to have the usufruct of 'Endell' which, on her death, was to go to her children.
Notes from David Limerick:
Hilda was adopted by her aunt, Mary Jane Dell (nee Kincaid) after the death of her mother. Two of her sisters were also 'adopted' - Blanche Una and Imogen. This adoption is in question and it is more than likely that they were just fostered and not officially adopted.
Notes from the file of Tessa King:
