A Wanganui man who was the first scientist to call the Piltdown Man a fraud.
Richard Morris Stovin TAYLOR, who was born in Wanganui and educated at Collegiate School, was known affectionately as "Doc" by hundreds of dental nurses, colleagues and children.
Dr Taylor began his career with the school dental service. During this period, from 1930-1948, he became the Health Dept's principal dental officer as well as the "colonial upstart" who challenged the British scientific community over the Piltdown Man. This was a supposedly ancient skull found in a gravel pit on Piltdown Common, Sussex, England, in 1912. It was claimed to be the missing link between man and ape.
In 1937, Dr Taylor told a group of scientists in Auckland that the dental arrangement of the skull could never have existed. He declared the Piltdown Man a hoax. It was to be 16 years before British scientists with the help of carbon dating echoed his hitherto ignored finding.
In 1935 he married Irene Bel RHODES (Rene), and they had 2 children, Diana & Michael (adopted).
Lived at 84 Kolmar Rd, Papatoetoe, Auck.
Richard Morris Stovin TAYLOR Noted in NZ Gazette 1921, Public Servant of Wanganui - Public Service Examination p.2088. - Auckland Archives.
Dr Taylor's close friend of 44 years, Newton Wickham, the Dental Association's welfare officer, said there had been a long campaign to have Dr Taylor knighted.
After running a dental practice at Papatoetoe, Auckland, for 16 years, Dr Taylor became an honorary research associate at Auckland University's zoology dept, and from 1979 was a visiting researcher at the school of medicine anatomy dept at the University. In 1980 he was awarded a doctorate in science at Auckland University. 8 years later he became the first dentist to be awarded the Royal Society's Marsden Medal.

General Notes: Born in Miss Laurence's Hospital, Wakefield st, Adelaide, on 25 September, 1922.
Her father was Asst Manager of the AMP for South Australia.
The family lived at 52 Burnside Rd, Kensington Gardens.
Jean and her sisters and brother attended Girton Proprietary School.
When she was 12 yrs old, the family sailed from Adelaide for NZ via Melbourne & Sydney, and arrived in Wellington on the 'Monowai' in January 1935. Her father was promoted to the position of Manager for NZ of the AMP. He retired in 1947. They lived in a rented furnished home in Woburn Rd, Lower Hutt. While there, Jean attended Chilton St James School in Waterloo Rd.
They then moved to 36 Grant Rd, Thorndon, and Karori.
From 1936-40 Jean was at Marsden Collegiate School, and in her final year she was Games Captain and Prefect.
In 1941 Jean enrolled at Victoria University but after a few months' study, decided instead to pursue, with other friends from Marsden, a commercial course at Gilbey's Commercial Collegte where she studied English, office procedure and shorthand typing. Thus equipped, she obtained a position, in early 1942, with a Wellington firm of accountants and auditors, Pattrick, Fiest and Jack.
In August 1942, with the war getting serious, Jean volunteered for the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and while continuing to live at home, performed her Army service at the then Museum building in Buckle St, which had been commandeered by the Army. With her commercial training, she was assigned to clerical duties which she apparently performed to the satisfaction of her superiors, for on 21 November 1942, she was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. But even that rank did not satisfy her Army superiors for she was selected for training as an officer and entered the first WAAC OCTU at the Trentham Army School of Instruction on 18 December 1942. Officer Cadet Ikin obviously displayed at OCTU the conscientiousness and abilities which she has displayed since she assumed command of the Taylor family for, out of a class of 26 cadets, she finished the course near the top of her class.
However things in the wartime Army seldom ran smoothly and with what the army called a 'SNAFU' (situation normal, another foul-up) it was decreed at the very end of the course that no cadet under the age of 25 would receive a commission. So, in early February 1943, Officer Cadet Ikin was posted to a Wellington based Light Anti-Aircraft Battery with the rank of Bombardier.
Jean left the Army on 19 December 1943. She worked as a secretary for the new Economic Stabilization Commission.
She met Richard Taylor in August 1945, and they were engaged on 26 September 1946. They then leased a flat in Hawkestone St, Richard moved in, and Jean set about making curtains etc. They were married on 1 February 1947 in St Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Molesworth St, Wellington. Their honeymoon was spent in Rotorua, Mt Maunganui and Taupo.
Then they journeyed to their new life in Washington DC where Richard was the Third Secretary at the NZ Legation.
