General Notes: NEWS REPORT (Sydney Media, Publication unknown, 4 December 1918). By ONLOOKER.
"The death of Charles McLeod last week removed one who for a long period was a cricketer popular with the crowd, and esteemed by a narrower circle to whom it was a privilege to be called a friend.
Thousands with but an indistinct memory of his deeds on the cricket field, will readily recall McLeod’s characteristic walk to he wickets, one hand in trouser pocket, the other trailing the bat loosely behind. The quick twitch at the back waist-strap before his delivery-run, too, will be remembered well. McLeod belonged to a numerous band of brothers, most of them good cricketers, some more distinguished than others. But each was a sportsman of high type, commanding great respect in Victoria.
The most famous were Robert (who died some years ago) and Charles, but a third brother, Daniel, was showing promise of distinction when death stayed his career. The youngest, Harry, was brilliant in the Scotch College eleven.
Bob and Charlie each gained international status. If comparisons are not out of taste, since both have passed away, I think that Bob was possessed of the ability to climb to greater heights. In my opinion, he was the better bowler, and in so saying, there is no disparagement, because Robert McLeod, as a fine wicket bowler in his best day, had no superior. Who that ever batted against him can forget that on-coming ball, which, as dear old Felix used to say, dipped and turned as pigeon in flight?
But it is of Charlie I write, kind, courteous, tender-hearted old Charlie, full of quaint mannerisms and whimsical humor that was a delight. Lightly-built, though tough and stringy, he had the heart of a lion. His courage was not of the death or glory type, but the quiet intrepidity no adverse circumstances could shake. He had an ideal temperament for big occasions, and to this quality he owed much for the position in Australian cricket to which he attained.
Chivalrous as a Crusader, Charles McLeod was the soul of honor. To him unfairness was abhorrent. Of independent means, he was lavish in charity, but always without ostentation. Hugh Trumble ……. to me that few knew how much Charlie McLeod did for the needy. Many of the ‘down and out’ knew his daily route.
I played for many years with and against McLeod; travelled and lived with him. His death caused me the grief one feels at the passing of a great friend. He was a lovable fellow, and he never lost poise. I remember a match against an English Eleven. It was late one hot sleepy afternoon. Charlie McLeod was plugging with tireless precision - his main asset as a bowler. Tom Hayward had been plodding along with that heart-breaking doggedness so familiar to Australians. On the overs went, one after another, maiden succeeding maiden, Charlie on the spot, Tom taking no risks. It became a patience test. The day drowsed on. I relaxed for a moment, and that very instant Hayward drove at me swift and straight. My hands got to the ball. It bounced out. It should have been a catch. There was no excuse. Burning with annoyance, I turned quickly to Charlie, then passing back to the bowling crease. His face was unclouded, a smile of reassurance was all I saw. There was no dissimulation - there could not possibly have been. It was all so instantaneous. And yet the loss of Hayward’s wicket must have been deeply mortifying to him, for the chances from the great English batsman were rare. The incident was illuminating, and when from the group photographs that hang on my walls I catch sight of Charlie McLeod’s kindly face, I know I am looking at the picture of a gentleman, and a friend whose going I deplore.
But on one of the trips McLeod had to England his comrades in the Australian eleven tested him. The tale as I heard it was that on the way over Charlie had the good fortune to occupy a cabin in which there was a spare berth. The head steward was induced to notify Charlie that at Port Said another passenger would arrive in the night to occupy the berth above Charlie’s. Jim Phillips, the international umpire, an insatiable joker, readily assumed the role of the newcomer, who, by the way was given a tubercular reputation. When Charlie went to bed, Jim arrived, wheezing, hacking, coughing and groaning, upsetting everything in the manner only those who remember Phillips’ huge bulk will appreciate. Climbing clumsily over Charlie, Jim had periodic paroxysms throughout the night, hoarse breathings, horrid wheezings, and every noise that Phillips could conceive as suitable to his part as a consumptive in the last stages. What with all this, and the humping and twisting of an 18-stone man just above him, Charlie, of course, could not sleep. But he never lost control.
It was only when, having risen first, Charlie was shaving, that Jim, with a last gigantic outburst, broke the imperturbability of his fellow-traveller. This broke Charlie up. Turning half-round, with razor in hand, he emitted his first and only words, ‘Dirty brute’. Dressing quickly, he hurried off to the head steward to get a change of berth, but later, at breakfast, when the news was broken to him, joined heartily in the laugh.
Though not great in the sense of a Griffen, Noble, Trumble or Armstrong, Charles McLeod was a first-class all-round cricketer. Bowling above medium, he swung away dangerously, and broke back with a quick nip. In battin, his style, if a trifle laboured, was correct. With stooping attitude, he was strong in on-play, and could drive well. Keen, watchful and patient, he was sound, but not often brilliant. His defence made him one of the hardest wickets to get in Australia. At cover, though not a Syd. Gregory, he was alert and sure, and a safe catch.
At the graveside a large and representative assemblage included Frank Laver, Hugh Trumble, Warwick Armstrong, V Ransford, William Bruce, J Slight, J Worrall, H J Stuckey, S McMichael, Syd. Donahoo and his brother Hector, Mat. Ellis, Justin Curr, E Bean, Major G Johnstone, John Perrin, Alf Carter, L Swift, W Catilin, H Rush, J Inskip, J Melville, W Donaldson, and R W E Wilmot.”
