One hundred years of dam construction and refurbishment in the Derwent valley were described in New Civil Engineer 9 September. The upper end of the valley, in wild Pennine country north of habitation, is occupied by three great reservoirs, made by the Derwent Valley Water Board to supply Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. The first two were made under the Derwent Valley Water Act of 1899. The first to be completed was Howden in 1912 and the civil engineer was Edward Sandeman who had made his reputation with the Burrator Dam near Plymouth.

On the morning of 21 February 1917, the troopship Mendi was almost cut in half by the SS Darro near the Isle of Wight, in the English Channel. She sank within 20 minutes and with a large loss of life.The SS Darro didn't even stop to help the victims. Of the 802 black South African Native Labour Corps on board, 607 died, so did 9 of their 21 white officers and 31 of the 69 crew members.
