General Notes: In an e-Mail received from Chris Wright in June 2013, is an extract from [the Cambridge] Telegraph, undated, which reads as follows:
An Inquest was held in Hora-Hora to-day into the circumstances attending the death by drowning of E.J.Fenn, engineer, of Auckland. It seens that Fenn, who was a powerful swimmer, and his Wife were bathing in a sheltered bay in the river, opposite the power-house, and just below the rapids. Fenn swam a short distance out than his wife, and suddenly called out to her that he was in diffuculties. Mrs. Fenn asked him to keep paddling while she ran for assistance, but when this was forthcoming a few minutes later Fenn has disappeared. The deceased volunteered for active service some time ago, but was rejected because of valvular heart trouble, and it is supposed he had a seizure while in the water. The body was recovered a few hours later. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.
Medical Notes: Ernest's Death Certificate states that he "accidentally drowned while bathing in the Waikato River through a Heart Seizure or Cramp".

General Notes: In a Document received from Chris Wright in April 2013, he included the following Information on the Military Service of Henry Wright:
Who's Who in the Navy 1915
WRIGHT. Lt.-Col. H.O.P., served in Battalion, Royal Marines, at Yokohama, Japan, 1870-74 (Gymnastic and Signalling Instructor); Adjutant, Portsmouth Division, Royal Marines, 1880-1885; Adjutant, 3rd (Blyths-wood) Volunteer Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, 1st November, 1885; author of "Volunteer Company Officers' Handbook for Parade, 1888"; appointed to the Reserve of Officers of Her Majesty's Army, March 1900; employed as Brigade-Major to 3rd Militia Brigade, Perham Down, Salisbury Plain, May, 1900, to October, 1900, under Brigadier-General Hume, C.B.; Commandant of Boer prisoners' camp at St. Helena. 1901, with local rank of Lieut.-Colonel, graded as an Assistant Adjutant-General; promoted to Lieut.-Colonel in the Reserve of Officers of the Army (gazette 24th February, 1903) in recognition of his service during the operations in South Africa (Medal); was Claim Commissioner under Sir Gordon Sprigg, K.C.M.G., and Sir Starr Jameson, K.C.B.; District Sub-Commissioner, 1903-04; Secretary to War Claim Inquiry Commission, 1904-07; retired from the Army Reserve of Officers, 10th October, 1904
AND, in an e-Mail received from Peter Wright in June 2013, he included the following Tale concerning the Life of Henry Octavian Percival [HOP] Wright:
According to my late Father, HOP was retired at the time of the 2nd outbreak of hostilities between the British and the SA Boer Republics. He was called out of retirement by the Crown to take up Command of the Boer prisoners on St Helena in 1899-1900. When the Boer War ended in 1902, he was so impressed by the Boer Commanders descriptions and tales of South Africa, that he accepted a position as a Loss Adjuster to the British & Boer farmers of the Eastern Cape, rather than return to the cold and miserable weather of the British Isles.
Many Afrikaaners in South Africa, descendants of the Boers, still object to the term Boer War, and call it Die Engelse Oorlog, The English War, because the British declared war on them, and not the other way around. Concentration Camps for civilians were a British Empire invention during the Boer War, and sadly, genocidal atrocities waged by British soldiers against the Boer women, children, elderly and their black farm workers is comparable with later Nazi crimes against humanity!!! The Scots Guards are particularly detested. The grandmother of an old friend and ex business partner of mine was savagely raped and abused by them as a young woman.
The Boer soldier POWs fared far better under Camp Commanders such as HOP, and letters of thanks from the Boer General POWs are well documented in South African history records. Family tales tell of HOP's attempt at age 65, to join up with his son Cecil in 1914, to go to France with the South African Army. He was turned down. Cecil was killed in the last days of the 1st WW - in the 1920s the German soldier who attended to Cecil in his last days, sent VEG [Helena Grace [Bastard] Wright] a very sad letter lamenting the futility of war, together with Cecil's personal possessions, such as they were at the time of his death. I lost the cyber copy I made of the letter in my computer crash last year, but I'll do another and send it to you. There is no explanation why my grandfather Jack, never signed up. All his sons, (my father and uncles) went North with the SA Forces, in the 2nd WW, and all returned.
In an e-Mail received from Mike Galbraith in September 2015, Historian for the Yokahama Country & Athletic Club, were the following Comments about Henry,
HOP Wright was very good at rowing and was in the Yokohama rowing four that defied the setting odds to beat Kobe in the first ever interport sports event in October 1871. That race was one of the most remembered events of the period. Somewhere I have a pretty detailed description of the event and should be able to tell you his weight, etc. He also played cricket both as a batsman and bowler for the Royal Marines Cricket Club, and I think he played for the RM at rugby too. He was a founder member of the Yokohama Amateur Athletic Club which merged in 1884 with the Yokohama Cricket Club, the Yokohama Football Club, and the Yokohama Base Ball Club to create the club that I am now the historian of! He also represented the RM at shooting but doesn't appear to have been too good!
Noted events in his life were:
• Birth: at 31 Clarendon Square, 10 Oct 1849, Leamington Spa Warwickshire England.
• Ministry: a Church Warden, 1906, Kalk Bay Western Cape South Africa.
Henry married Helena Grace BASTARD [93652], daughter of Thomas George BASTARD [99798] and Mary Ann Elizabeth CHUBB [99799], on 10 Dec 1885 in St James Westminster Middlesex England. Helena was born on 23 Oct 1864 in Sheerness Isle of Sheppey Kent England and died on 27 Apr 1955 in Kalk Bay Western Cape South Africa at age 90. Another name for Helena was Violet Eleanor Grace COURTNEY-BASTARD.
General Notes: There has been considerable Discussion within the Family as to just who the Father of Helena's first two Children were, Supposedly, the Children of a Captain Percival Henry Clifford of the Royal Marines. However, extensive searches by the Family have never found a Record of any such Person.
From an e-Mail sent by Michael Forrester to Catherine [McAdam] Groeneveld-Meijer in June 2013, he included the following Information on Helena:
Helena was an orphan and as such was not allowed to marry under the age of 21 (sounds strange to me but anyway). She was raised in Kitley, south Devon in a large house on the estate. She married our great grandfather Henry Octavian Percival Wright in June 1883 (he was born in Leamington on 10 October 1849 - he was thus 34 when he married). Eleanor married him under the name of Clifford ( I would be interested to know how that happened), thus she was only 17. He did not get permission to marry her from his commanding officer (also strange but maybe that's how it worked in those days) As a result of this marriage she lost all her inheritance. The first of their children was Percival Henry, known as Uncle Jack. He was born in 1884 at Southsea, Southampton. The next child was Cecil Henry, Uncle Cecil who was born in 1885. Thus both those children were illegitimate because their mother was still under the age of 21.
Further Information from Peter Wright indicates that perhaps Helena was born in 1866, and quoted incorrect Birth Years to the Census Takers in 1871 and 1881, but quoting her Correct Birth Year [1866?] for the 1891 Census. This would mean that she was only Seventeen and a Half Years of Age when Percival Henry [Jack] was born.
AND, in January 2018, and e-Mail from Peter Wright [of South Africa] included the following Passages:-
My parents Frank & Shirley as the self-appointed S.A. Wright Family Historians, aided by my Uncle Cecil & Aunt Addie (who actually took Great Aunts Phyllis & Sally on a trip to England in the late 50's or early 60's to "find their roots"), tried over a long period to make sense of VEG's [Violet Eleanor Grace Courtney-Bastard] claim to being "a ward in chancellery i.e. the illegitimate daughter of nobility", therefore the illegitimate daughter of a Courtney-Bastard of Kittley Manor, near Portsmouth in Devon. I did the same in 2005. She made fanciful claims i.e. "knowing Old Mother Hubbard's dog" which was obviously not possible: (The poem was first told at her sister's house, Judith Anne Marti, wife of the notorious politician John Pollexfen Bastard. The lyrics were actually inspired in 1805 by an old housekeeper of her sister's house, (presumably Kittley Manor),who lived in a cottage on their property after giving up work). Cecil, Addie & I saw, 50 odd years apart, a stuffed dog in a glass container in a local tavern, which is claimed to be the inspirational dog!!
Only when we made contact with Chris [Wright], and his meticulous "Census records" was it established that she probably was Helena Grace Bastard, and not related to a South Devon Courtney Bastard at all.
AND, following this, another Passage:-
My Family was apparently never party to the "considerable Discussion" [mentioned above] or in any doubt that Captain Percival Henry Clifford was indeed always Henry Octavian Percival Wright. Interestingly, his Military Record has him stationed in Portsmouth near Kittley Manor around 1883 when they were supposed to have married, but didn't!! (his mother Nancy was only about 16yrs in June 1834, when she married his father William) That he was having to duck and dive while cavorting with under aged VEG, taking on assumed names and dates for respectability, there is no doubt, but then he was quite a lad. His military record also shows that he was boarded and sent home from Okinawa, Japan, after being the One Mile Race Champion, in the early 1870's, suffering from recurring syphilis!! Very hard to believe that he went on to have a distinguished Military record on St Helena as Camp Commander of the Boer Prison Of War Camp, then on to Commandant of the Royal Marines in Simonstown, and became the Church Warden of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Kalk Bay in 1906. He was heralded by the Boer Generals in their letters of thanks to he and VEG, as an astute, humanitarian and upright man. Ref: Boer War Letters by C.A. Hollenbach 1999, who consulted with my parents over many years to gather all their information and photographs from Broadbottom Camp, St Helena. A full chapter is dedicated to HOP [Henry Octavian Percivil Wright].
VEG's claim to be an "orphan, raised with nobility in Kittley Manor", is no longer taken too seriously by the South African Wrights, for lack of corroboration, but it has made for interesting discussion and speculation over the last 60yrs. There is however no doubt that she behaved and acted as if the British Queen was HER cousin, displaying airs and graces of high birth, spending lavishly and keeping poor old HOP as close to bankruptcy as is possible. As small children we held her in great awe!!
