Canterbury joiner Owen Morris Wright, 40, will be buried in a coffin crafted by his workmates using native timber left over from building his family home in Lyttelton.
The father of two survived the initial quake at his Joinery by Design business in Christchurch, but was killed by falling boulders in an aftershock as he tried to get home to his family.
His two brothers and sister helped clean up his Woolston factory yesterday before staff spent the day making his coffin, cousin and business partner Evan McLachlan said.
"It's the sort of thing that `O' would be really keen to do for other people.
It's mainly macrocarpa that he had to build his house. The handles are made out of totara."
A date for the funeral had not been set, Mr McLachlan said.
Mr Wright loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, off-road driving and more recently diving.
He was planning to retire in five years to spend more time with his wife of 17 years, Megan, and children Sarah, 6, and Eric, who turned 4 on Sunday, Mr McLachlan said.
Mr Wright's brother Tony Wright Jr said he had helped build the coffin and manned the bandsaw, but left the more talented individuals to handle the intricate parts.
"I have to say tears aren't a good combination when you're working a bandsaw."
