General Notes: Reproduction of a letter written to Samuel Armitage in Pennsylvania
Aulton ye 20th of ye 1st Mo. 1741
Dear Son,-
After our true love to thee we hope these lines will find ye all in good health as by the mercy of God we are all of us in a good degree of ye same enjoyment.
This may let ye understand I received thy letter dated ye 9th of ye 8th month upon ye 10th month 1740 which thou writ being at your Yearly Meeting in order of sending the same by Isaac Whitlock which accordingly came but their ship by distress of weather was in great danger of being made a wreck of in ye west coast of England as himself told me at Leeds which caused him to send by ye post from that place.
Loving son we was glad at receiving of it, to hear thou was in so good health and of thy welfare and business which we hope in time may prove more to thy advantage for Isaac told me it.
A School Master in your country has the privilage of writing ye most Bills and Bonds which are made use of. He also gave me a very good account of thy conduct of which was a matter of joy to us.
I told in a letterbefore what a severe winter we had last yeart which was followed by as bad a summer for we had not one month in it without frost and for most part in ye fore end a verry cold east wind so that ye increase of ye earth was but small the smart of which hath been sufficiently felt this winter, wheat brings mostly 18s to 22s 5d per load and all other things in proportion answerable and hay is sold at 6 pence ye stone some csttle being lost for lack of food, in short all eatables both for man and beast hath been more than double ye price to what it has been usual.
The last letter I writ ye I sent in from York being there at Quarterly Meeting I thought when I took it with me from home I might have had some better opportunity of sending than by ye Post but could not so I put it in ye Post Office, in which letter I told of William Boocock's imprisonment upon ye account of tythes where he still remaines with Richard Ward and Benjamin burn in York Castle.
John Thompson and his sister Ann still follow their business as far as I can find.
My lease being now expired John Clayburn and I having made a small engagement only but for ye bottom as far as ye upper bridge as we used to call it and a little close by ye river called little barley banks for 9s in ye year so that we have but little but our trade to follow.
I gave over keeping market ye beginning of ye last 3rd month it not agreeing with my health.
John Butterfield hath been down since ye time called Christmas to see his relations but made but a short stay being in readiness after his return to London for Jamaica, his brother William having business ready for him, he was twice at our house but made a short stay ye latter time other wise I should have sent ye letter by him but ordering me to send it to London after him he would take care to forward it.
I thought it ye most proper way to send it by him for as Isaac Whitlock is returning and Jonathan Dayton purposes to send byu him and will mention us in his letter I thought if ye one should miss it it may please God they both will not.
Thy brother John is with us and doth some little at his business but cattle are both scarce and verry dear such as are meat that there is but little good to be done as yet for him.
Thy brother Henry is almost loose of his contracted apprenticeship and seth he will work journey work untill such time as he hopes to see thee hear. He is grown a good workman and I hope will be a good lad. Thy sister Sallie is grown almost a woman she is at present learning how to write.
I would not have ye miss of any opportunity of sending to us but that we may know the state of one another as much as may be and how affairs go and send us word whether thou hath anty thoughts of ever following our business as I shall conclude with true love to ye, trusting ye Lord will prosper both thee and us is what we sincere desire.
From thy affectionate parents
Samuel and Sarah Armitage.
Remember my love to Joseph Leyton and his family and tell him that Johns family is all pretty well and so is Samuel Jorite and remember their love to thyself is what they request and Jonathan purposes to send brother Joe, a letter. Thy cousin John Thompson desires to have his love known to thee so doth Grace Mitchell and her daughter and always glad to here from thee. Thou will accept the same from them.

General Notes: died at 83 years and 10 months
According to Benjamin Armitage's tombstone inscription, he was born about 1698, so he was a small child when he made the ocean crossing to the American Colonies.
Benjamin Armitage spent his entire life in Bristol Township, Philadelphia Co., PA. During his lifetime he was seized with two large tracts of land. The first was from his father:
Philadelphia Co., PA Deeds, Deed Book G S, Vol. 7, p. 6
2 - 2 mo., April 1728
Benjamin Armitage, the Elder, Bristol Twp., Smith, wife Mary, to Benjamin Armitage, their son, a stone message and 200 acres in Bristol Twp., Phila. Co., PA (being the 200 acres from Ellis Jones, miller., Dec 1, 1702, recorded in E 5, Vol. 7, p. 107, in consideration of love and affection and L 100 (lbs.) Recorded July 18, 1737
It is interesting that the Deed for the sale of this property is dated April 2, 1728. Later, Benjamin Armitage, Sr. bequeathed the property to his son, Benjamin Armitage, Jr., in his Will, which was executed January 2, 1735. Notice that the Deed for the property was not recorded by Benjamin Armitage, Jr. until after the death of his father.
The second tract of land, containing 157 acres, was a tract of land on Old York Road which Margaret Luken, executor of John Luken, conveyed to Benjamin Armitage, Jr., on October 19, 1737 (Deed Book E, Vol. 10, p. 389, Phila Co., PA Court House).
In 1784, Benjamin Armitage, Jr. enlarged the old homestead. It is still standing in Northwood Cemetery, having been used by the Superintendent for many years.
Benjamin Armitage, Jr. was also the owner of two other smaller tracts of land. He owned a tract of 20 acres, 33 perches, being the same that Bridges Miles and Griffith Miles, executors of Griffith Miles, conveyed to Benjamin Armitage on April 22, 1723. (See Deed book H, Vol. 9, p. 514). The second smaller tract consisted to about 14 acres, which has been purchased from James Morgan.
The existing tax records as found in PA Archives show Benjamin Jr. to have been assessed for 299 acres in 1769, and 300 acres in 1774. All of the property eventually came into the hands of his children - some retained the land and some sold out.
Since Benjamin Jr. had along with his brother, James, inherited his father's blacksmith tools, iron, bellows, vise, and anvil, one would assume that he would be a blacksmith. However, in the Deed to the Abington Presbyterian Church. Benjamin Armitage, Jr. is referred to as a Joyner. According to Webster's Dictionary, a joyner (joiner) is "one whose occupation is to construct articles by joining pieces of wood; a mechanic who does the woodwork (i.e., doors, stairs, etc.) necessary for the finishing of buildings." Some time ago there was a record located that stated Benjamin Armitage, Jr. made cartridge boxes for our Army during the Revolutionary War.
It was not clear if Benjamin Sr. or Benjamin Jr. signed the Covenant of 1714 for the Abington Presy. Church of Phila. Co., PA but it was Benjamin Jr. who executed the Deed on Oct 17, 1752. It is clear that Benjamin Jr. remained a faithful member of the Church throughout his lifetime. Most of his children were baptized there and he had two wives buried in the Church graveyard; along with some of his children.
On April 27, 1773, Benjamin Jr. applied for a Warrant of Land containing 300 acres in Westmoreland Co., PA. Benjamin Armitage, III also applied for a Land Warrant. Taxes were levied against the two in 1786, although at this time Benjamin Jr. was deceased at this time. This land, which was then in Armstrong Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA now embraces the City of New Kensington, PA. The Armitages nostalgicly called their grant "The Hermitage", but it was eventually claimed and settled by other pioneers. The Will of Benjamin Jr. was written on October 25, 1773, and filed for probate on December 31, 1781. Special bequeaths were made to his son Benjamin III; daughters Hannah Reser; Mary Reed; and to the grandchildren of son Enoch, who was deceased; and to the daughter of Martha, who was deceased. After the equeaths were made, the residue of his estate was to be divided among sons James, Jacob, Caleb, and Joseph; with Joseph getting 100 pounds more than the other three sons.
