200. Capt. James ARMITAGE [7536] (Benjamin145, Benjamin119, James94, Godfrey86, John73, Edward62, John53, John39, Edmond29, Richard22, Roger16, James, Of Wrigbowls7, John, Of Wrigbowls (Sir)3, Bryan, Of Wrigbowls (Sir)2, John, of Wrigbowls (Sir)1) was born in 1720 in Bristol Pennsylvania USA, was baptised on 21 Apr 1723 in Abington Presbyterian Church Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA, died on 19 Jan 1805 in Franklin Huntingdon Co Pennsylvania USA at age 85, and was buried in Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church Graysville Pennsylvania USA.
General Notes: On April 21, 1723, James Armitage was baptized by the Rev. Malachi Jones at the Abington Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia Co., PA. On his tombstone it says that he died in 1804, aged 84, so that puts his year of birth at 1720. James Armitage followed his brother to Philadelphia, PA, where he probably met seamen at his brother's Inn establishment. James Armitage became a Mariner. James and Sarah Tobey Armitage lived in the Rock Ward, South in Philadelphia, PA. They had at least four children that lived to adulthood.
As a mariner, James Armitage, was caught up in the Revolutionary War. According to the PA Archives, he was the Master or Captain of at least three ships. In 1776, James Armitage was in command of the "Sloop Chance", which had 6 guns and 35 men. In conjunction with another vessel, the "Congress", James Armitage captured the English ship "Brittania Brig" from Jamaica to Liverpool, carrying a ton of ivory. The two ships also rescued 12 Privateers from her, and carried their prize and captives into the port of Philadelphia. These Privateers took great risks at sea in their relatively small sailing craft, and brought home much needed supplies for the Army and country. His service has been entered in the "DAR Patriot Index".
(List of Armed Vessels from Port of Philadelphia, 1776-1777, with form of bond - Muster Rolls of the PA Navy 1776-1779) James Armitage was the Master or Captain of the "Sloop Chance" , the owner was John Bayard, Jos. Dean & Co'y, Philadelphia
James Armitage was the Master or Captain of Brigantine "Sally" and the Owner was Thomas Leaming & Co'y, it had 14 carriage guns, 50 tons, and 30 men.
James Armitage was the Master or Captain of the Brigantine "James", the Owner was John Pringle & Company, it had 6 carriage guns and 30 men.
As mentioned in other accounts, James' brother Jacob Armitage had been buying up land in what was first Cumberland, then Bedford, and finally Huntingdon Co., PA. From family tradition we were told the brothers were motivated by the scare of yellow fever which was rampant in the Philadelphia area.
James Armitage took out a Warrant from the Land Office at Harrisburg on July 23, 1776, for a tract of 191 acres, called "Job's Comfort" on Warriors Mark Run, Frankstown Twp., Bedford Co., PA.
James Armitage resided in Philadelphia as shown by the PA Archives until 1783. In that year, he moved his family West to the land on which he had received a Patent. It was various times Barree Twp., Cumberland Co., Frankstown or Huntingdon Twp., Bedford Co. and became Tyrone, Warrior Mark or Franklin Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA.
In 1783, James Armitage was taxed in Bristol Twp., Philadelphia Co., PA for 26 acres which was inherited from his father's estate. By the division of his father's property, James Armitage received a messuage and two tracts; one of 31 acres, the other of 20 acres.
On June 1, 1785, James Armitage and his wife Elizabeth sold the two tracts of land to Anthony Nice and Benjamin Keyser. These were the same gentlemen who had purchased the land of Jacob and Joseph Armitage.
James Armitage continued to add to his holdings in Huntingdon Co., taking out two additional Warrants from Harrisburg; one in 1785 for 230 acres of land and another in 1788 for 100 acres.
On the Bill of Sale of his property made by his two sons after his death, it states that James Armitage owned several tracts of land situated in Franklin and Warriors Twp.'s containing about 800 acres.
From the Tax Records of Huntingdon Co., PA we learn that James Armitage had a Grist Mill and a Saw Mill on his vast estate. His four children lived near him, probably on some of his land.
James Armitage lived to the age of 84. He died possessing 800 acres of land, a saw mill and grist mill, he executed his Will on July 25, 1804. It was filed for probate on January 28, 1805. Named in his Will were his wife Elizabeth; sons John and Benjamin; daughters Mary and Elizabeth; grandsons John Kennedy and Jerry Sandler (Jeremiah Chandler) and William Armitage; and granddaughter Mairy Armitage.
James married Elizabeth [7540] [MRIN: 3763].
James next married Sarah TOBEY [7541] [MRIN: 3764] on 11 Jun 1746 in First Presbyterian Church Philadelphia Co. Pennsylvania USA. Sarah died after 1762 in Philadelphia Philadelphia Co Pennsylvania USA.

General Notes: Abstracts from Ben Franklin's PA Gazette - Thomas Holms offers reward for recovery of a mare, strayed or stolen from the Rising Sun, between Phila. and Germantown; the more or information thereof may be brought to the owner at Mr. Armitage's, the Rising Sun, or the Crooked Billet (26 June 1746).
In the estate of Mary Shewbart (mother of wife, Mary Shewbert) dated On Sept 21, 1774, Mary Shubart's Will was Probated, it listed her daughter Mary Shubart-Armitage as the wife of Benjamin Armitage, Innholder. Mary Shubart Armitage received L £200, as her share of her mother's estate. Records in the PA Archives show that Benjamin Armitage III was taxed in 1769 in the Dock Ward of the City of Philadelphia. In 1774 and 1779 he was taxed in the South Ward of the City. At that time Benjamin Armitage was the proprietor of an Inn said to have been called "The Blue Bell Inn". This Inn was located in the Southern part of the City near a bridge over Cobb's creek.
Times must of been hard on Benjamin Armitage III during the Revolutionary War from 1774 on and he evidentually suffered financial reverses of some kind. His father, in his Will cut him off with only 5 shillings, stating that he (the father) had had to pay debts for his son amounting to nearly L £500.
In the 1785 Philadelphia City Directory it lists Benjamin Armitage as a blacksmith, located on Lombard St. between 2nd and 3rd. This probably indicates that he had lost the Inn by this time.
Benjamin Armitage III died on July 20, 1789 and in 1791 from the Philadelphia City Directory, Mary Armitage, (his widow), was listed as a shopkeeper at 41 Lombard St. When she died and was buried on Aug 10, 1791 with the notation reading "Mrs. Armitage, poor, 71 years".
Evidently the other heirs of Benjamin Armitage, Jr. must of felt bad about the treatment handed out to their brother, for they conveyed a lot of land to the children; Shubart Armitage and Mary Armitage-Thompson, only surviving children of Benjamin Armitage III.
Benjamin married Mary SHEWBART [7849] [MRIN: 3884]. Mary was born in 1721, died on 10 Aug 1791 in Philadelphia Philadelphia Co Pennsylvania USA at age 70, and was buried in Second Presbyterian Church Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA.
