22. Earl Gilbert IV d'UMFREVILLE of Angus [120387] (Richard V of Redesdale (Lord)16, Odinel II9, Odinel I5, Robert III of Tours & Vian (Lord)3, Robert II of Tours & Vian (Lord)2, Robert1) was born about 1195 in Northumberland England and died before 13 Mar 1244 in Penmark Glamorganshire Wales.

General Notes: In a Document received from Marigold [Roberts] Potter in March 2021, she stated that,
Gilbert paid homage to Henry III and £100 for the King's relief and delivery of his lands.
by the king to be at Berwick on Tweed to accompany Alexander of Scotland to York where the two monarchs met. Gilbert witnessed the signing of a charter between England and Scotland.
AND, Wikipedia says,
Succeeding his father Richard in 1226, he married his first wife was Tiffany, who was a member of the Balliol family. After she died, in 1243 he married Maud [or Matilda], widow of John Comyn and daughter of Malcolm, Earl of Angus, who was the mother of his only son, Gilbert III. He is usually called Earl of Angus in right of his wife, who remarried after his death.

Gilbert married Countess Matilda nic MAEL COLUIM of Angus [120388]. Matilda was born about 1215 in Angus Scotland and died in 1261 in Prudhoe Northumberland England aged about 46.

General Notes: Wikipedia says of Matilda,
Matilda of Angus, also known as Maud, was the daughter of Maol Choluim, Earl or Mormaer of Angus and, as his heiress, was countess of the province in her own right.
and,
She married John Comyn, but he died in France in 1242. They do not appear to have had issue.

A husband was needed to control the dispersed earldom; she then married Gilbert de Umfraville, a Norman, who was feudal Baron of Prudhoe in Northumberland. He died shortly before 13 March 1245, but not before Matilda had borne him a son named Gilbert to succeed to the earldom in his infancy:

Gilbert, married Elizabeth Comyn, daughter of Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan, had issue. He died in 1308.
Matilda married again before 22 December 1247, Richard de Dover (a grandson of King John of England), the feudal baron of Chilham, Kent, the son of Richard Fitz Roy. Matilda disappears from records after producing two children:

Richard of Chilham, Lord of Chilham. He died before 10 January 1266.
Isabel, married David I Strathbogie, Earl of Atholl, son of John de Strathbogie and Ada, Countess of Atholl, had issue.

Noted events in her life were:

• Death: at Prudhoe Castle, 1261, Prudhoe Northumberland England.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 28    i. 8th Earl Gilbert d'UMFREVILLE of Angus [120284] was born in 1244 in Prudhoe Northumberland England and died on 13 Oct 1307 in Prudhoe Northumberland England at age 63.

   29    ii. John d'UMFREVILLE [124006] was born about 1246 in Prudhoe Northumberland England and died in 1314 aged about 68.
