General Notes: In August 1701 the hot blood of the Forsters showed itself when Ferdinando Forster of the Bamburgh family, and MP for Northumberland, quarrelled with John Fenwick of Rock. The quarrel took place over dinner at the Black Horse Inn, near the White Cross in Newcastle (in Newgate Street near the end of High Friar Street). Newcastle Assizes were then being held and the dinner party is said to have been for the gentlemen of the Grand Jury. Forster took offence when Fenwick sang a political song favouring the Fenwick interest, but others present managed to calm him down. Next day the parties happened to meet each other, also close to the White Cross. Swords were drawn and Forster was killed "between the White Cross and a thorn tree". Fenwick was eventually hung outside the Newgate Gaol amid strict security. He owned coal mines at Kenton and it was thought possible that the Kenton miners might attempt a rescue. To avoid the need to bring him out into the street, Fenwick was hung on a piece of timber fixed between the Gaoler's House (later the Burgoyne pub) and Newgate Gaol, one effect of which was to place him in a position where he was executed within sight of the scene of his crime.
