Robert & 1st wife Mary Ann Matthews married 29 November 1830 and had 7children before Mary Ann died of pneumonia in January 1849. 2 of the children, Elizabeth & John, must have died prior to the family leaving England as no further information has been found concerning them.

William, Elizabeth & John were christened in St Sampson, York;
Mary Ann, Robert, Harriet & John were christened in St Michael-le-belfry,York.

Married Ellen Dodsworth 8 April 1849 in Castlegate, York, England.

Lived at 14 Swinegate, York - made application to sail on the "Larkins" from London, leaving 7 June 1849, arrived at Wellington on 21 October1849.

They had 8 children between 1850 & 1865.

First settled in Porirua Rd, Johnsonville, later moved to the River Hutt Flat, and then to Tory St, Wellington.

Off Tory St branches Ebor St, which was subdividied by the owner, Robert EDWARDS. He gave the classical name of the town Ebor (Latin "Eboricum" ) to the street.

Died of alcoholism on 19 March 1880 aged 73. Buried on 22 March at Bolton St Cemetery, Wellington.

Probate filed 17/4/1880 in Wellington Ct. Probate No. 1434.

Headstones: "Sacred to the memory of John B EDWARDS, d.23 April 1869 a.22; also of Caroline D EDWARDS d.25 January 1880, a.19 years; also of Robert EDWARDS, father of the above, d.19 March 1880 a.73.
Therefore a rest to the people of God.
Also of Ellen, wife of the above, d. 15 May 1905, a.84."
