Mr Charles Henry Hills, the stationmaster of the Shannon Railway Station, was born in 1854 in London where he was educated. After five years at sea, he came to New Zealand, and followed various pursuits till 1881 when he joined the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company in Wellington and acted as Stationmaster respectively at Johnsonville, Paremata and Paekakariki, taking charge at Shannon in 1893. From notes by Allan Maxwell GASCOIGNE:
"Pater HILLS spent the first part of his working life at sea on sailing ships trading between England & NZ, and it was on one of those trips that he met Elizabeth EDWARDS. When on a subsequent voyage he married her, he gave up his career at sea and settled in Wellington. They were both very short people. Pater was primarily a ship's carpenter, was interested in making sailor's knots, mending boots and shoes, soldering and cabinet making, and had a liking for astronomy. Pater
possessed a strong sense of humour and was always cheerful. "

In 1878 he married Elizabeth Ellen EDWARDS in Wellington.
