He was a wonderful father - a man of strong character - a quiet man and a wonderful Christian who did not have to go around preaching and telling people he was a Christian. When in his presence you could somehow feel a calm and a peace within.

During the depression many people would buy shoes for their children, but many people never paid for them. He would say 'never mind, we can't have the kiddies going to school bare-footed in this cold weather."

People in the neighbourhood would come to talk to Harry and pour out all their troubles to him, and ask his advice about different things.

Married Ellen (Nellie) Charlotte WRAY in 1906 in NZ, and they had 5 children, all born in Wellington. 'Joyce Alice' is not in 1918-21 fiche - only a few 'Joyce'.

Died in 1954 in P.N., and is buried in Kelvin Grove Cemetery, P.N. - Blk 10, Plot 45.

Came to NZ as a child of 3 yrs. Ship "City of Auckland' wrecked at Otaki.

Grocer/storekeeper - very successful. Keith took it over on his death, but it declined after that.

Known as "Pa" by Allan's children. Allan writes:

He had a great thirst for knowledge as he had a very poor school education, and was largely self taught. He had an excellent vocabulary,was a frequent newspaper correspondent, and took a keen interest in community work, being a Blenheim Borough Councillor for many years. His ability to express himself well was inherited from his father who would have made an excellent Court lawyer. In the serious depression of the1890s, Grandpa was forced into bankruptcy. He was also a very keen gardener and a successful exhibitor at horticultural shows."

Allan GASCOIGNE's daughter, Beverley CRESSWELL, wrote to the Central Registry of Birth in London but they were unable to trace any birth notice from 1872 - 1876 for William Edward GASCOIGNE.

Died in Mental Hospital, Nelson.
