William was in the 22nd London Regiment Machine Gun Corps during WWI. He fought at Hill 60 in the Battle of the Somme and was wounded by shrapnel.

• Occupation: as a Groundsman, 1911, Streatham Surrey England.

• Military Service: in the 22nd London Regiment Machine Gun Corps, Battle of the Somme France.

• Occupation: a Meter Reader, 1936, Croydon Surrey England.

William married Ellen Elizabeth ROBERTS [104959], daughter of Henry ROBERTS [104951] and Sarah Annie POLLARD [104867], on 25 May 1911 in Immanuel [Church] Streatham Common London England. General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elilzabeth Marshall in July 2016, she included the following:-
Little is known of Dorothy's early years but had three children by Italian musician and composer Francesco Girone. They lived together as man and wife even though Francesco was already married and had arrived in the UK with his wife Eugenie some time before 1891. They are together in 1901 but by 1911 Eugenie is living alone. Francesco and Dorothy had their first child Francesco in 1914, followed by Clelia 1916 and Regina 1920. Eugenie died as Girone in 1923 as 'widow of Francesco Girone' who had died just weeks before her. Dorothy still went by the name of Girone and it was the name she used on her marriage to Arthur Chiddy in 1944.In the 1930's Dorothy was nurse to Penelope and Robert Shirley of Tamworth. Robert Shirley (Viscount Tamworth ) (1929-2012) became the 13th Earl Ferrers in 1954 on the death of his father.
