Admin / Biog Notes : Philip Gidley King, 1758-1808, joined the British Navy in 1770 and after service on several ships was selected by Arthur Phillip as second lieutenant on the Sirius. Subsequently in 1788 and 1791 he went to Norfolk Island in charge of the settlement. He went back to England in ill health in 1796, but returned to New South Wales in 1799 with a dormant commission as Governor. He became the third Governor of New South Wales in 1800. In 1806 he resigned and sailed on H.M.S. Buffalo to England where he died in 1808.
